Under supervision, assists a credentialed Speech-Language Pathologist in providing speech therapy services to identified students in accordance with Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals; performs a variety of duties in support of student case management services; performs related work as required.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS A Speech-Language Pathology/Assistant participates and collaborates as a member of an educational team by assisting in providing student speech therapy services to special needs students in accordance with the mandates of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. An incumbent works under the guidance and direction of a credentialed Speech-Language Pathologist in developing and providing services for individual students to improve their academic performance.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
Assists in providing student speech therapy services according to Individual Education Program (IEP) goals and treatment plans developed by a Speech-Language Pathologist;
Assists in the assessment of student communication skills;
Confers with Speech-Language Pathologist regarding student progress;
May attend IEP meetings for assigned students; present findings and recommendations as approved by a Speech-Language Pathologist;
Maintain confidentiality of sensitive and privileged information;
Provide assistance to educational staff as a case management team member through consultation, training and individual and group activities;
Document student progress toward IEP goals and objectives by preparing charts, records, graphs, or other means of documentation;
Prepares therapy materials and equipment for use in the classroom and including therapy activities such as picture cards, worksheets and audio equipment;
Adapt or modify instructional materials as determined by student needs for teacher use in the classroom;
Lift and position students into and out of orthopedic equipment and adjust equipment.
Observe and control behavior and interaction of students according to approved procedures;
Utilize positive restraint techniques according to established procedures as necessary if written in IEP;
Perform a variety of general support duties such as maintaining records, files and preparing reports related to assigned students to include reviewing prior year placements to see if changes are necessary;
Attend a variety of meetings, workshops and in-service trainings to maintain current knowledge of developments in the field of Speech-Language Pathology.
MINIMUM ENTRANCE QUALIFICATIONS
LICENSE REQUIRED Possession of a Speech Language Pathology Assistant License (SLP/A) through the Department of Consumer Affairs or currently enrolled in 12 continuing education units from California Speech and Language Association (CSHA) approved trainings and eligible to apply for SLP/A licensure.
Experience: None required.
Education: Graduation from a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant Associate of Arts degree program or equivalent course of study approved by the Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Board.
JOB COMPETENCIES: Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of: Speech and language development theories and practices; Language, articulation, and hearing disorders; General methods and techniques of individual and group speech therapy; Principles of child development and behavior; Operation and maintenance of augmentative communication devices and equipment; Phonics; Record keeping and basic report preparation techniques; Health and safety regulations; Laws, rules, and regulations related to assigned program and activities; Technical aspects of field of specialty; Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary; Oral and written communication skills in English; Proper methods of lifting and positioning students in and out of orthopedic equipment.
Ability To: Understand and carry out oral and written directions, including intervention plans; Assist in providing speech therapy services for identified students; Communicate satisfactorily orally and in written form; Demonstrate an understanding, patient, and receptive attitude toward children; Establish and maintain a cooperative and effective working relationship with children and adults.
