This employment list will also be used for future EAST AND WEST Jefferson vacancies in various Departments as they occur.

Under general supervision, the purpose of this position is to perform routine to moderately complex accounting work requiring keeping and maintaining general accounting, budgetary accounting, and other fiscal records at the sub-professional level. Work involves examination and verification of a variety of accounting documents and financial computations, the posting of accounts, and the preparation of routine to more complex accounting statements and financial reconciliations, and similar duties for an assigned work unit. Maintains and updates assigned department logs, records, lists and accounts as applicable to assigned work units, including routine cash journals. Duties may vary depending on assigned Department.
For the current vacancy in the Building Permits Department, this position is responsible for General Fund payment transactions which entails new filings as well as final/additional charges and credits as it relates to gas, mechanical, electrical and plumbing contractors; zoning appeals; building permits; Board of Standards and Appeals, contractor licenses (both new and renewals); and miscellaneous accounts. This position prepares, processes and posts various payments received by the Cashier's office. Answers phones and directs calls to appropriate section/person or takes message.
Minimum Qualifications For Admission to Examination
Meets ONE of the following:
1. Current employment with Jefferson Parish and permanent civil service status as an Account Clerk I.
OR
2. Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent, supplemented by successful completion of at least two courses* (at the high school level or above) in bookkeeping, clerical accounting, or closely related (indicating knowledge of elementary accounting principles and practices); plus, at least one (1) year of work experience performing bookkeeping or clerical accounting, such as data entry for accounts payable and journalization of transactions.
OR
3. Successful completion of at least twelve (12) credit hours of college accounting coursework at an accredited college or university.
*Substitution: An additional six months of work experience performing bookkeeping or clerical accounting may substitute for the two required courses in Option 2.
Proof of qualifying education is required.
Kind of Examination
(ENTRANCE AND PROMOTIONAL)
A written test, weighted 100%, will be administered. The test is designed to evaluate knowledge of basic bookkeeping practices and modern office procedures, plus mathematical skills necessary to maintain records and make computations. Qualified applicants will be notified by mail of the date, time and place of the written examination. The Personnel Department reserves the right to determine the quality and quantity of experience claimed.
