FY25 – Kinesiology Instructor/Athletic Director Split Assignment

The Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) announces an opening for a Full-Time Kinesiology Instructor with a contractually permissible, proportional reassigned time assignment to serve as the Athletic Director at Los Angeles Pierce College (LAPC). The Athletic Director assignment will be a D-Basis (i.e., 12-month) proportional assignment, with reassigned time dependent on the number of athletic teams active in the college and could change. The position will be assigned to a teaching assignment of at least 0.20 FTE in Kinesiology.

Los Angeles Pierce College (LAPC) Athletic Program serves over 340 Student-Athletes across eight (8) intercollegiate sports, including: Baseball (Men’s), Basketball (Women’s and Men’s), Football (Men’s), Soccer (Women’s and Men’s), Softball (Women’s), Volleyball (Women’s and Men’s), and Swimming (Women’s and Men’s).

The Athletic Director *AD) reports directly to the Dean of Student Services. The AD is a leader to the team of Head Coaches, Assistant Coaches, Athletic Trainers, and staff. The AD directs and monitors the work of all coaches. The Athletic director is responsible for providing regular reports to Administrators. The Kinesiology department offers classes in weight training, yoga, aqua exercise, and non-competitive sports classes, as well as theoretical classess.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES FOR KINESIOLOGY INSTRUCTION:

In accordance with its mission as a community college, instruction at LAPC includes lower division courses. Faculty members at LAPC are expected to facilitate student learning by designing varied and exciting learning environments. The regular weekly teaching load is 15 standard hours per semester. Evening and/or weekend classes may be scheduled based on department needs. Duties of these positions include, but are not limited to the following:

· Teach courses in kinesiology over an academic year in accordance with established course outline of record;

· Maintain scheduled office hours for student contact;

· Participate in the development and the assessment of student learning outcomes (SLOs) and program learning outcomes (PLOs) and participate in required program planning and annual program review;

· Complete and submit required documents in accordance with district policy;

· Devote required time, in accordance to faculty contract, to campus and department responsibilities (committees, accreditation, etc.);

· Work collegially with members of the department, classified staff, students, faculty and administrators to maintain professional conduct and ethics, and foster a professional working environment;

· Participate in professional development activities and maintain current knowledge in the discipline;

· Maintain accurate records (e.g., grades, attendance, class exclusions, etc.) and submit records in accordance to district policy and board rules;

• Assume appropriate share of the development and updates of department courses and curricula;
• Develop resources, materials, and strategies, including using multimedia technology (Pierce Online / Canvas) to teach students in a multicultural environment;
• Maintain professional and ethical standards;

· Promotion of the various LAPC Athletic Programs, on campus and to the community;

· Host and organize regular meetings between administration and faculty to discuss Athletics progress, resource needs, and pressing issues;

· Develop and implement a strategy to encourage interest in Kinesiology certificates and degrees, and related STEM majors among Student Athletes.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE LAPC ATHLETIC DIRECTOR INCLUDE:

• Provide leadership to the team of Head Coaches, Assistant Coaches, Athletic Trainers, and staff. The Athletic Director directs and monitor the work of all coaches.
• Ensure compliance with college, district, and conference, local, state and federal guidelines including student- athlete eligibility requirements; disseminate information on and implement rules and guidelines for specific sports; compile, interpret and disseminate information pertaining to the NCAA Division I, II, III, and NAIA transfer requirements for our student-athletes.
• Develop and monitor the program budget through responsible fiscal management and coordinate athletic fundraising, marketing and public relations in compliance with the policies of LAPC, Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD), California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA), Western State Conference (WSC), and Southern California Football Association (SCFA).
• Develop, write, and edit all required documentation for Title IX compliance such as the annual Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act (EADA), CCCAA Gender Equity Form R-4, department mission, diversity and gender equity statements.
• Schedule athletic events and secure officials, transportation and personnel necessary for program implementation and ensure the proper scheduling, maintenance and use of all athletic facilities.
• Operationalize, lead and delegate responsibilities to assure game management, risk management, and supervision for all LAPC intercollegiate athletic home contests.
• Monitor the work of all coaches, the athletic department secretary, and Athletic Trainers and ensure ongoing professional learning to staff and faculty by conducting seminars, workshops, in- service meeting/training, and clinics.
• Advance student well-being and academic success and ensure the department’s commitment to maximize the educational potential of all student-athletes; including comprehensive education planning to promote Student-Athlete progress and completion of educational goals and promote the academic achievements of student athletes by maintaining the Scholar-Athlete of the Month and Student-Athlete of the Year awards program.
• Represent Athletics as an active member and participant in the CCCAA, WSC, SCFA and the California Community College Athletic Directors Association
• Participate in recruitment and outreach of students and coaches.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES ACROSS CAMPUS INCLUDING:

· Administrative Services representatives to ensure fiscal planning and management of an annual $1.4 million budget, adherence to college and district procurement processes and payroll guidelines; identification of preferred vendors for Athletic Department resources; identification of Athletic Facilities maintenance priorities to ensure ongoing operational utility.

· Student Services representatives to coordinate Student-Athlete enrollment and eligibility verification; coordination of efforts with Financial Aid, Categorical Programs, and Basic Needs officials to maximize Student-Athlete benefits and resources and diminish out-of-pocket expenses; coordination with Counseling Division to promote comprehensive educational planning to reduce time to educational completion; coordination of outreach efforts to enhance Student-Athlete recruitment; implement comprehensive new student onboarding; promote LAPC’s Athletic Programs and service high schools.

· Academic Affairs representatives to recommend and develop data-informed scheduling of Kinesiology Athletics courses linked to intercollegiate sports, timely updates to course outline updates; enrollment targets and timelines, informed educational goals and employment readiness among student athletes through Career Exploration activities; implementation of academic support strategies for Student-Athletes to improve success, retention, and completion rates; onboarding of new faculty and relevant professional learning of tenured and adjunct faculty hires.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Master’s degree in kinesiology, physical education, exercise science, education with an emphasis in physical education, kinesiology, physiology of exercise or adaptive physical education; OR
• Bachelor’s degree in any of the above AND a Master’s degree in any life science, dance, physiology, health education, recreation administration or physical therapy; OR the equivalent;
• Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic background as well as accommodating any disabilities of community college faculty, students and staff.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS – ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENT AND COVID 19 VACCINATIONS:

A medical certificate indicating fitness to engage in administrative work is required for new employees at the applicant’s expense prior to employment.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

• Professional experience relating to the successful management of an intercollegiate sports program.
• Professional experience relating to the integration of Kinesiology Athletics toward Student Athlete’s academic success and degree attainment.
• Educational and professional experience in Sports Administration.
• A minimum of three years of leadership experience in an Athletics program at the high school, community college, or four-year college/university;
• Evidence of successful teaching, coaching, counseling or athletic director experience in Women’s/Men’s sports in a community college setting
• Effective leadership and management skills; strong organizational and communication abilities, as well as problem solving, mediation and conflict resolution skills;
• Evidence of successful program budgeting and fundraising experience.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Strong background in Nutrition and/or Public Health.

SALARY AND BENEFITS:

The current starting range is from $72,990 to $135,620for the ten-month academic year depending on education and experience. The Ph.D. differential is $4,610 per academic year. The district provides an excellent benefits package including medical, vision, dental, and life insurance to the employee and eligible dependents. The Athletic Director Stipend is allocated at $2,687 annually, per intercollegiate sport offered at the college, except if the college offers football, which counts as two stipends.
