NAGPRA Associate/Full Specialist
The University of California (UC) adopted as a fundamental value the repatriation of Native American and Native Hawaiian human remains and cultural items (associated and unassociated funerary objects, sacred objects, and objects of cultural patrimony), in accordance with state and federal law. The goals of the UCSF NAGPRA project are to repatriate in compliance with the UC Native American Cultural Affiliation and Repatriation Policy, Federal NAGPRA and California NAGPRA. This position supports the NAGPRA Project team in achieving the stated goals. The UCSF NAGPRA Project was initiated in 2020 to proactively address NAGPRA compliance for the campus. The NAGPRA Project initiated UCSF-wide searches of Native American and Native Hawaiian human remains and cultural items (associated and unassociated funerary objects, sacred objects, and objects of cultural patrimony), in accordance with state and federal law. It has been working on compiling NAGPRA Summaries and Inventories that are submitted to National NAGPRA and tribal representatives. The NAGPRA Project is updating NAGPRA Summaries and Inventories as necessary. The Associate/Full Specialist will assist with collection management, documentation, and communications in support of the implementation of University of California Native American Cultural Affiliation and Repatriation Policy, Federal and California Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA). They also will assist with preparing for NAGPRA transfers. The NAGPRA Point of Contact and Chancellor’s Designee will jointly supervise the Associate/Full Specialist and provide day-to-day direction. The Associate/Full Specialist will work with materials housed at the UCSF Archives & Special Collections as well as other departments. Assists with managing documentation for the NAGPRA program, communications with tribal representatives and university communities. Update program databases in preparation for consultations. Update NAGPRA Summaries and Inventories when new items are identified. Organizes artifacts and records as needed. Conducts archival research relevant to identifying funerary objects and cultural items, compiling general context, ethnographic, and historical information. Assists with consultation preparation including preparing appropriate materials and records for viewing. General office duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
Individuals appointed at the Associate rank must possess a master’s degree (or equivalent degree) or five to ten years of experience in the relevant specialization.
Individuals appointed at the Full rank must possess a terminal degree (or equivalent degree) or ten or more years of experience in the relevant specialization.
Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) legislation and compliance.
Experience working with UCSF NAGPRA project team.
Ability to work respectfully with culturally sensitive collections.
Ability to work collaboratively and communicate in a clear, professional, and sensitive manner.
Maintain and protect confidential and sensitive information.
The selected candidate will hold a 15%-20% FTE appointment. See Table 24B for the salary range for this position. A reasonable estimate for this position is $70,500-$181,800.
