The Harris County Engineering Internship Program (HCEIP), led by Dr. Santa Maria, Chief Administrative Officer connects and designs internship program for youth aged 18 and over pursuing post-secondary opportunities. Through HCEIP, students will immerse themselves in local government programs, policies, and issues as they build professional skills for their future careers. HCEIP is committed to recruiting students from diverse educational, economic, racial, and ethnic backgrounds that reflect the diversity of the residents Harris County serves.
Harris County Engineering department ensures that youth experience leadership training, professional development through real-world work experiences.
Job Duties/Responsibilities:
Interns will be fully immersed in existing teams and be responsible for various tasks to assist project teams with field visits, design support, customer service, research, community outreach, administrative and project management functions.
The program will include mentoring and professional development opportunities.

Requirements
Education:
Candidates must be currently enrolled (at time of application) in a college or university working toward a degree in Engineering (Civil, Environmental, Mechanical, Electrical), Surveying, GIS, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Construction Management, Business, Finance, Human Resources, Communications.
Candidates should have completed a minimum of two years of study.
Candidates must have completed a minimum of twelve (12) credit hours (4 courses) in courses relative to their chosen major.
Experience:
Interested students should provide a resume indicating classes taken, software competency, and other associated skills or experiences.
Additionally, a COVER LETTER IS REQUIRED outlining why they chose their respective field, what they would like to do upon graduation, and why they would like to work for Harris County

General Information
COMMITMENT
Accepted applicants must work full-time in their placement office. Participants are expected to serve a 40-hour workweek for the entire length of the program. (8 hours per day for 10 weeks.)
All applicants will work full-time and in-person.
PROGRAM POLICIES
Maximum of one person per family unit may be accepted and placed for Fall 2024.
If accepted into the program participants are responsible for their own transportation to/from assigned placement.
Interns must have reliable transportation to get back and forth to work. The use of public transportation is encouraged.
Interns must have a valid driver’s license.
Interns must complete the internship in its entirely. If you decide you must leave early due to any circumstances, you will be automatically dismissed from the program and must wait one year to reapply.
If you do not submit leave request to your direct supervisor and the HCEIP staff, you will be written up and your host site has discretion to dismiss you from the program.

Physical Demands:
Frequent standing and walking; prolonged sitting for extended periods of time.
Frequent stooping, bending, reaching, lifting, and carrying of items up to 10 pounds with occasional lifting of up to 20 pounds.
Extensive use of a video display terminal (computer monitor).
Occasional sorting, filing, shelving, and handling of documents, books, files, materials, and equipment.
Working Environment:
Frequent standing and walking on rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces and ground during field visits.
Must be willing to work in various weather conditions when visiting a field location where there will be exposure to heat, cold, moisture, air pollution, wind, and dust.
Employment may be contingent on passing a drug screen and meeting other standards.
