PAINTER
DEFINITION
Under general supervision, to perform skilled work in the preparation of surfaces for painting, mixing, and matching paint, and the application of paints to a variety of surfaces; as assigned, to assist other tradesmen by performing unskilled and semi-skilled duties as a helper in other maintenance trades areas; and to do related work as required.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
A major portion of the time of positions in this class is spent in performing skilled painting and surface preparation work. As assigned, positions are expected to perform tasks in other maintenance trades at an unskilled or semi-skilled level as a helper or independently.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Uses brush, roller, and airless and compressor spray gun equipment in applying paint, varnish, shellac, enamel, lacquer, and other protective or decorative finishes to various surfaces such as wood, metal, glass, plaster, stucco, wallboard, brick, and cement; washes, scrapes, sands, fills, and in other manner prepares surfaces for painting and repainting; applies under and finish coats, sizes and tints plaster walls and other surfaces; may refinish furniture, lockers, and other equipment; erects, rigs, or moves scaffolding and platforms; cleans and performs routine maintenance on brushes, tools, and equipment; paints signs and door numbers, mixes paints, matches, blends, harmonizes and contrasts color; lays out and paints athletic courts and parking lots; may estimate amounts of materials and labor required for painting jobs; may perform routine plastering duties; assists other maintenance personnel in various trades by performing unskilled or semi-skilled duties; plans and lays out assigned tasks; estimates and records time, labor, and materials; supervises the work of helpers.
LICENSE REQUIRED:
Possession of a valid and appropriate California Driver's License.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
The standard practices, methods, materials, and equipment used in painting, tinting, and finishing work; the methods of preparing different surfaces for painting and repainting; appropriate safety precautions and procedures.
Ability to:
Mix paints and match colors skillfully; erect and work from riggings and scaffolding; plan and lay out work including estimating labor and material cost; work from sketches and plans; maintain simple records; work cooperatively with those contacted in the course of work; understand and carry out oral and written directions; read and write at a level sufficient to read work orders and specification information related to mixing and applying paint.
Experience:
One year of experience as a Painter at a skilled level, or two years of experience as a Maintenance Worker II in the El Rancho Unified School District in an area in which the incumbent has acquired competence at a skilled level in this trade.
Education:
Persons with the experience, knowledge, and abilities as stated are considered to have the necessary education.
