Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Assists in the development of prevention needs assessments and recommends overall prevention strategies to be used with identified school populations
Conducts in-service trainings and provides ongoing assistance for school personnel on implementation of prevention curricula and other strategies and on current prevention issues including identification of the signs and symptoms of alcohol and other drug use
Monitors the implementation and evaluation of prevention programs in assigned schools
Provides training for parents and other community members based on assessed needs
Assists in design, development and implementation of conferences, workshops and training sessions
Works collaboratively with school personnel/committees/teams to address related areas of concern
Conducts individual student assessments and interventions, facilitates student support groups and makes referrals to appropriate resources
Assists school personnel in developing, training and implementing student leadership programs (i.e. Peer Helpers, TeamSpirit, President’s Roundtable, cross-age training, etc.)
Works in collaboration with school and community agencies/organizations/department/programs that address high risk behaviors and attends advisory council meetings, PTA/PTO and faculty meetings, as needed
Maintains appropriate records and documentations
Pursues professional growth opportunities including, but not limited to, the acquisition of and/or maintenance of the License for Prevention Professionals
Participates actively on staff committees and teams to promote and maximize collaboration and communication, sharing of expertise, diversity and networking
Supervisory Responsibilities
Manages the activities of teams and/or I CARE committees as assigned by the director. Responsibilities may include assisting with interviews; planning and directing the tasks of the teams/committees and resolving problems. While in schools or with students the supervisory responsibilities are managing students appropriately.
Essential Functions and Qualifications
The essential functions for the position of I CARE Specialist include the physical and mental involvement requirements noted in this position description in addition to regular reliable attendance given the limited number of employees available to perform the essential functions of this position. It is also essential that the specialists be able to follow the directives of superiors in ensuring the harmonious operation of the department.
EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE
Graduate of an accredited college or university with a masters degree
A valid Louisiana teaching certificate with at least five years successful teaching experience preferred
Training and/or experience in the field of substance abuse and violence prevention with skills in counseling, group process, peer leadership, critical thinking and collaborative undertaking preferred
Currently holds a License for Prevention Professionals (formerly Board Certification as a Prevention Specialist), issued by Addictive Disorders Regulatory Authority Board (ADRA Board) or will complete the requirements for and obtain aforementioned license within three (3) years of employment with the I CARE program
