Summary of Position:
Performs routine and standard laboratory tests and procedures on various biological specimens, following procedures and instructions as outlined in clinical research sponsor documents and procedure manual(s) using standard and specialized techniques, instrumentation and equipment to assist in the conduct of clinical research activities associated with industry sponsored clinical trials, government funded grants and investigator initiated research studies conducted through the Clinical Research Center.
Minimum Qualifications:
1. Formal Education Required (either A or B):
a. Bachelor of Science degree listing one of the required areas of study (Biology, Chemistry, Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science) if degree does not list area of study transcripts must be submitted for equivalency evaluation.
1. Acceptable transcripts must include(1 or 2 below):
1. Sixty (60) semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution that, at a minimum, includes either 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, OR 24 semester hours of science courses that includes six semester hours of chemistry, six semester hours of biology and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology in any combination, OR
2. One (1) year in approved program or equivalent with certification/registry with an accredited recognized agency or organization (e.g. ASCP, AMT, etc.-- ASCP and NCA merged 10/23/09).
OR
b. One (1) year clinical laboratory experience and categorical certification from ASCP BOR in area of experience
2. Certifications:
a. Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Lab Scientist (MLS) or certification eligible from the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT), preferred.
3. Experience and Training Required:
a. Experience as a Medical Laboratory Technician in a healthcare related field, preferred.
b. Laboratory science training from an accredited college or successful completion of medical laboratory technician trainee role, preferred.
c. Ability to read, comprehend, and follow complex research protocols and determine requirements to ensure sample processing meet study design and regulatory requirements.
d. Ability to read, comprehend and follow standard laboratory procedures and instructions.
e. Use of computers or ability to acquire such skills to operate application packages used by department.
4. Other Skills, Competencies and Qualifications:
a. Manual dexterity sufficient to calibrate, operate and perform preventive maintenance on laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
b. Ability to work under stress, communicate test results to physicians, nursing units and/or other authorized personnel.
c. Demonstrated proficiency with a variety of computer-based skills, especially in the use of word processing spreadsheets, database and presentation software, productivity tracking applications and the ability to undertake internet searches.
d. Must be self-directed and able to work independently, with demonstrated ability to work in collaboration and cooperation with members of a multidisciplinary team
e. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing sufficient to prepare reports for publication
f. Ability to establish and maintain effective interpersonal relationships with research team members, students, project site staff, and subjects
g. Problem solving and critical thinking skills
h. Assumes accountability for demonstrating behaviors consistent with customer service policy.
i. Population Specific Competency: Ability to effectively interact with populations of patients/customers with an understanding of their needs for self-respect and dignity.
5. Level of Physical Demands:
a. Medium: Exerts 20-50 pounds of force occasionally and/or ten to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force continuously to move objects.
