Overview
Under the direction of the Head of Special Collections and the Executive Director of the Oliveira Lima Library, manage library operations, including public services,technical processing, preservation, collection development, facilities management, and part-time staff recruitment.
Responsibilities
• Direct public services operations. Develop and implement access policies concerning use of rare and archival materials, photo-duplication requests, copyright and permissions to publish, remote access, and inter-library loan; provide in-depth reference services to on-site and remote library users in collaboration with the Oliveira Lima Library coordinator. • Cultivate knowledge of and interaction with CUA’s research mission and its various potential user communities within the faculties and staff and the larger student body. • Collaborate with fundraising efforts and support activities together with the Oliveira Lima Library coordinator. • Assess, create and maintain catalog descriptions of rare books, manuscripts and other items of the collection, including artwork. • Identify current and potential user communities and promote interaction with these through instruction and outreach programs that aim at encouraging the use of collection materials. • Locate and retrieve bibliographic materials. • Manage stacks, optimizing use of space while preventing damage to collections. • Plan and implement procedures for collection development, including accessions and deaccessions. • Implement preservation and handling practices for rare books, manuscripts, and other collection materials. • Develop and supervise the implementation of a digital curation plan for rare books and manuscripts. • Participate as a professional member in the University Libraries with academic status, in shared collegial decision making and planning; participate in committees and ad hoc projects contribute to the library profession and engage in professional development activities; participate in and contribute to professional organizations and publications.
Qualifications
A Bachelor's degree in Library & Information Science, History, Modern Languages, or social sciences with emphasis on Luso-Brazilian studies.
Master’s Degree strongly preferred.
Knowledge of Luso-Brazilian studies
Fluent in Portuguese, Advanced in Spanish and English.
Knowledge of archival principles.
Familiarity with publishing in Brazil and Portugal.
Ability to create and maintain catalog descriptions of rare books, manuscripts and other collection materials.
Experience with Microsoft Office package, including Word and Excel. Experience with Google products such as Google Drive, Google Docs and Google Sheets.
Excellent interpersonal skills and experience working collaboratively with varied groups within a complex organization and team environment.
