Position Summary
Essex Property Trust is seeking a talented HR Leader to oversee the general Human Resources fuction, which includes policies and programs while balancing employee advocacy and business operating needs. Promote equity, fair treatment, and a positive employee experience, ensuring compliance with employment laws. Provide comprehensive HR support in the area of employee relations, leave of absence management, best business practices, engagement, retention, continuous performance coaching and management, and pro-active issue/problem identification and resolution working closely with business leaders allowing for better decisions and organizational effectiveness. Oversee and administer employee safety programs in coordination with operations, including OSHA requirements, IIPP, and workplace violence prevention program. Oversee and partner with worker’s compensation team and program administration. The Director, HR Compliance will provide tactical, strategic, and analytical support in the assessment, design, and delivery of HR programs.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to the following:
- Oversee employee relations and compliance, responsible for the organization’s adherence to employment laws, legal standards and in-house policies and procedures to include HR policies and procedures, maintain records, I9 requirements, and unemployment claims management. Stay current with changes in HR related legislation.
- Perform risk assessments provide business advice, and recommend actions in various HR areas to mitigate company exposure, manage risk, uphold ethical standards, and maintain company values. This role serves as a consultative expert on employee relations and associated legal matters across the organization.
- Provide leadership and oversight to HR team and set the vision, goals and initiatives for the team in alignment with business and organizational effectiveness.
- Recommend, design, and implement Human Resources programs to ensure continual improvements in efficiency of department and services performed.
- Anticipate and plan for long-term Human Resource needs and trends in partnership with HR Leaders, providing strategic leadership support.
- Assistance related to employment litigation, EEOC claims, and federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations.
- Oversee the administration of the leave of absence program and processes, comprehensive case management, program compliance with FMLA, FEHA, ADA, and all other employment related laws.
- Partner with learning and development teams to identify and develop HR training throughout the organization.
- Oversee and administer various HR facing safety programs and procedures, including the company’s IIPP, OSHA requirements, COVID 19 compliance, and company’s Workplace Violence Prevention program.
- Partner strategically with Legal and Ops to oversee and administer company’s worker’s compensation program and interface with worker’s compensation insurer regarding policy administration.
- Facilitate assigned activities in support of organizational change management initiatives.
- Assists HR leadership with special projects as assigned.
Job Requirements:
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Organizational Behavior or related field, plus 8+ years of progressive experience in HR Policy, Compliance and/or employment law/General HR field. Certification in Human Resources (PHR), (SHRM-CP), (SPHR), (SHRM-SCP) preferred.
Candidate must excel in the following areas:
- Excellent knowledge of employment laws and policies, and ability to interpret and apply laws, regulations, policy.
- The ability to create a vision and goals for a team and inspire and motivate the team to achieve excellence in terms of employee experience and core HR processes.
- Experience and skills in the following HR functional areas: employee safety, worker’s compensation, , performance management, , leave of absence management, diversity equity & inclusion, employee relations, EEOC compliance, policy development, and global human resources.
- Experience and skills in developing HR policies and programs.
- Ability to provide leadership, vision, and technical and project management in setting priorities and meeting project timeline goals from conception to implementation.
- Strong managerial skills with the ability to organize and delegate tasks; motivate individuals and teams; lead conflict resolution and problem solving; performance feedback and coaching.
- Ability to use independent judgment and strategic thinking skills in identifying and resolving complex problems and operational conflicts or concerns. Ability to make decisions independently and with confidence.
- Experience working collaboratively as part of a multifunctional and/or an interdepartmental team.
- Strong understanding of business/operational processes.
- Ability to influence others, e.g., cross-functional stakeholders and leaders.
- Capability to work with limited direction, usually within a complex and often ambiguous environment, to drive linear, fact-based insights, recommendations, and solutions.
- Passionate about making things better, e.g., improving processes, reducing/removing inefficiencies.
- Team-oriented, collaborative, and thoughtful.

The salary range for this position is $134,000.00 - $201,000.00 per year. New hires generally start between $134,000.00 - $167,000.00 per year. The final salary offer will be determined after reviewing relevant factors, including but not limited to skill sets; relevant experience; internal equity; and other business and organizational needs.
This role is also eligible to participate in Essex’s discretionary Annual Bonus program that is commensurate with the level of the position.
