Brief Description of Duties

This is a staff level position reporting to the Associate Director or Director of Career Services. The incumbent functions as the Career Counselor in the Office of Career Services. This position counsels students and alumni on a variety of career development and readiness topics. This position is responsible for assisting students and alumni in applying and interviewing for jobs, internships, and other positions as well as coordinating career programs for in partnership with employers, recruiters, and faculty/staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Counsel students and alumni individually and in groups on a variety of career development topics such as career exploration, job readiness, resumes, cover letters, thank you letters, mock role-play interviews, interview clothing, jobs, internships, other positions, professional development opportunities, and continued education opportunities, and etc.

• Assess students and alumni interests, leisure activities, skills, personality, strengths, values, job readiness, and etc with career exploration assessments, job readiness assessments, and other career assessments.

• Develop and instruct career workshops and presentations for students and alumni on a variety of career development topics such as career exploration, job readiness, resumes, cover letters, thank you letters, mock role-play interviews, interview clothing, jobs, internships, other positions, professional development opportunities, and continued education opportunities, and etc.

• Communicate and recommend job, internship, and other positions as well as continued studies, professional development opportunities, and career programs to students and alumni.

• Identify and develop employment opportunities with employers, recruiters, and faculty/staff such as part-time jobs, full-time jobs, internships, externships, fellowships, and volunteer positions as well continued studies and professional development opportunities for students and alumni.

• Outreach to faculty and staff while serving as the liaison for assigned school(s), college(s), and/or academic programs of study to promote and develop university relationships for career programs, employment opportunities, data initiatives, and etc.

• Coordinate career events and career programs with faculty/staff, employers/recruiters, and community partners such as career workshops, information sessions, interview sessions, networking sessions, career conferences, employment events, job fairs, internship fairs, career fairs, and etc.

• Assist with the maintenance of the career management system and other career systems while collecting data and completing data entry such as appointments, client check-ins, user accounts, career events, employment positions, career opportunities, career informational resources, employment outcomes, office documents, and etc.

• Represent the Office of Career Services at university, employer, and community partner events which may require travel between campuses and off-site locations.

• Prepare and submit reports for career counseling outcomes while maintaining records of activities and data.

• Perform all other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

• Completed a bachelor’s degree; preferably a master’s degree or higher in counseling, human resources, human services, psychology, social work, or behavioral health.
• Completed at least three (3) years of related work experience; preferably with college students and alumni.
• Proficiency in client relations systems or information systems; preferably with Focus 2, Handshake, and Banner.
• Proficiency with computer software applications including Microsoft Office Suite Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Publisher, and etc.
• Proficiency with technology including computers, copiers, printers, scanners, faxes, telephones, projectors, and etc.
• Proficiency with social media such as LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and etc.
• Able to travel between multiple campuses and off-site locations.

Condition of Employment: This is a sponsored program appointment. The duration of this appointment is subject to grant fund availability.

Collective Bargaining Unit (Non-Union): This position is not in the collective bargaining unit.

Employment Benefits: Depending upon length of appointment, selectee may or may not be eligible for full benefits such as health and life insurance, annual (vacation) and sick leave and will be covered under the University of the District of Columbia’s retirement plan (TIAA).
