| Summary | The Assistant Director of Pre-Health Professions is pivotal in guiding undergraduate and graduate students through their journey from recruitment to acceptance into health professions graduate programs. This includes medical (MD, DO, and DPM), dental, veterinary, physician assistant, physical therapy, optometry, pharmacy schools and more. The role involves advising students, facilitating growth opportunities, and participating in the Health Professions Advisory (HPAC) application and interview processes. Collaborating closely with the Director, the Assistant Director is instrumental in planning and executing Pre-Health programming at all levels. Reporting to the Director of Pre-Health Professions, the Assistant Director is part of the leadership team in the College of Health and will assist in the design and implementation of university-wide pre-health programming that is focused on improving support of student progression, retention, and graduation in health professions. |
| Duties and Responsibilities | Advising: - Inform Pre-Health students on curriculum choices, career options, and extracurricular opportunities with a focus on career discernment and reflection through advising, regular meetings, and workshops.
- Stay current on diverse health profession programs, including prerequisite courses and required experiences, application processes, curricula, and trends in healthcare career pathways.
- Assist the Director with the Health Professions Advisory Committee (HPAC) process, including data management, interview scheduling, student feedback, and writing letters of recommendation.
- Maintain the Canvas-based Pre-Health Professions Professional Development Program, evaluate completed activities and assignments, monitor student progress, and provide appropriate feedback.
- Establish and maintain Early Acceptance Programs (EAP) in collaboration with the Director of Pre-Health Professions in various healthcare areas with partnership institutions with a focus on keeping EAP students in compliance with program requirements.
Recruitment: - Respond promptly to information requests from prospective students and participate in recruitment events, personalized visits, and informational meetings to inform potential students of experiential opportunities and curriculum options at JCU, including healthcare Early Acceptance Programs
- Act as the primary point of contact for recruiting through enrollment for the Pre-Medical Post-Baccalaureate program within the Graduate School
Communication: - Plan, promote, and implement student programming events, including speakers, career panels, volunteer opportunities, and healthcare-related events.
- Utilize technology for effective communication, website maintenance, and social media outreach.
- Develop and distribute a Pre-Health Professions newsletter to provide information, highlight program changes, celebrate achievements, and summarize upcoming events.
- Provide program assessment data for internal and external reporting.
- Assist with the collection and review of applications for Pre-Health Scholarships and serve on the selection committee.
Student Learning - Teach up to 6 credits annually between Pre-health Professions minor and other academic departments (if applicable and as needed)
- Coordinate external partners for student learning experiences such as suture clinics, observational opportunities, etc.
- Oversee the JCU shadowing & Reflection Programs by soliciting feedback, communicating the need for revisions, and ensuring a regular schedule of workshops/presentations.
Assessment & Reporting - Collect information on the number of students who apply, are accepted, and matriculate to healthcare professional schools, completed in partnership with Institutional Research
- Report on assessment and outcomes to campus partners

| Required Qualifications | - Master’s or terminal degree in Biology, Chemistry, Nursing, or healthcare professions.
- Exemplary cultural competencies and understanding, as well as a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to present to groups.
- 2+ years of student advising experience.
- Proficiency in using Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite, and telecommunication software such as Zoom.
- Collaborative work ethic and excellent communication skills.
- Strong service orientation.
- Interest in understanding and supporting John Carroll’s mission to inspire individuals to excel in learning, leadership, and service in the region and the world.

| Preferred Qualifications | - 3+ years of student advising experience in the health professions.
- Experience with university computer systems and programs (Canvas, Banner, Coursedog, etc.).
- Previous teaching experience in higher education in a field related to STEM and/or healthcare professions.

| Normal Work Location, Hours and Conditions | This position works in person from our campus in University Heights, Ohio. University core business hours are generally 8:30am – 5:00pm. However, this position will require work outside of normal business hours based on department and university operations. Some weekend and evening work will be required. |

| Compensation & Benefits | Starting salary will be $45,000 – $55,000, commensurate with qualifications.
