Ability to perform routine cleaning and custodial functions with limited supervision within a framework of standard policies and procedures. Ability to assume responsibility for the general cleanliness of assigned area at a school site within the district. Any combination of training and experience which would indicate possession of the knowledge, skills and abilities listed. Completion of the twelfth grade or the equivalent and six months of experience in the care and cleaning of buildings and facilities.
Positions in this classification are assigned to day work at a school site working under the direction of the site administrator. Light maintenance and emergency duties are performed by the custodian.

MAJOR AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:
Perform a variety of semi-skilled activities in the maintenance and repair of district buildings, grounds and equipment.
Perform interior and exterior preparation and painting.
Perform routine janitorial and custodial functions at an assigned site/plant within the district; check boilers, heating and/or air conditioning.
Clean classrooms, restrooms, showers, locker rooms, shops, cafeterias, auditoriums, gymnasiums, offices and related facilities.
Sweep, mop, scrub, wax and polish concrete, linoleum, tile and wood floors, door panels and hand railings.
Wash windows and walls, clean chalkboards; move and arrange furniture and equipment in preparing classrooms/multi-purpose rooms for special events or meetings.
Vacuum rugs and carpets, replace light bulbs and lighting tubes, clean Venetian blinds, dust drapes and make minor, non-technical repairs as needed.
Raise and lower flag, lock and unlock doors and gates, set security system in assigned areas.
Maintain security of buildings, turn light systems on and off and secure area.
Report safety, sanitary and fire hazards to appropriate authority; report need for maintenance repairs to appropriate authority.
Inspect buildings and grounds for safety and security; maintain security of building(s).
Has knowledge of utility shut off locations and maintains posted map at various locations throughout the site.
Coordinate with maintenance department and site office to convey status and potential maintenance needs.
Pick up paper and debris; rake, sweep, water grounds, clean entrances and walkways.
Move, arrange and set up furniture and equipment for special events.
Participate in heavy cleaning and minor maintenance and repair activities during summer.
Order, check, replace and deliver supplies.
Operate cleaning equipment such as vacuums, floor cleaning and polishing machines, clean tables, chairs and floors after lunch periods.
Respond to call backs in an emergency and where required, respond to emergency cleanups such as spills and clogged drains.
Review placement of heating plant and ventilating systems as needed; inspect, turn boilers on and off.
Perform light maintenance and repair using hand tools.
Maintain regular attendance.
Work cooperatively with others.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:
Training and Experience: Any combination of training and experience, which would indicate possession of the knowledge, skills and abilities listed herein.
Knowledge: Knowledge of modern cleaning methods, materials, tools and equipment, safe use and operation of equipment and chemicals used in janitorial and custodial work; safe working methods and procedures, information concerning heating plants and facilities, boilers and ventilating systems.
Abilities: Ability to safely, efficiently and effectively use cleaning materials, read at a level sufficient to successfully perform required duties, understand and follow oral and written instructions, meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform the required duties, establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties.
Physical Effort/Work Environment: Perform heavy physical effort which may include extensive standing or walking; frequent lifting or moving of heavy parcels, machines or equipment weighing fifty or more pounds; frequent activities requiring full body exertion. Some exposure to outdoors work in weather extremes.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
A pre-placement physical examination may be required.
Possession of a valid California driver’s license and automobile insurance coverage that conforms to California state law.
Possession of a valid First Aid Certificate.
Evidence of a negative TB test every four years.
SALARY RANGE:
Range 21 on the Classified Unit Salary Schedule
