The Maryland National Capital Park & Planning Commission is an award-winning organization with over 5,000 employees that administers over 52,000 acres of stream valley parks, large regional parks, neighborhood parks, and park-school recreation areas throughout Montgomery and Prince George’s counties. In Prince George’s County, we are also responsible for developing the County’s public recreation programs.
The Department of Parks & Recreation has the overall responsibility for planning, supervising, and coordinating all park/recreation facilities and services throughout Prince George’s County. The Northern Region Parks Division (NRPD) is one of three maintenance Divisions within this Department and is composed of eight major work programs: Fleet Management/Trades, Building Maintenance, Area Maintenance, Playgrounds, Trails, Athletic Field/Turf Management, Trash/Recycling/Waste Management, Program Support, and the administrative section. The mission of NRPD is to provide professional, high-quality maintenance and maintenance support services for all parks and recreation facilities and to support the diverse work programs of the Parks & Recreation Department in Prince George’s County and its customers.
This position is located at the Polk Street Maintenance Facility. All applicants to this job posting will be considered for this and future Carpenter II job openings for 6 months or until qualified candidates have been exhausted from this job posting, whichever comes first. At that time, a new job posting may be available for application to future openings.
Examples of Important Duties
Perform general and finish carpentry and related tasks in major and minor construction and renovation projects.
Construct facility components such as cabinets, shelves, counters, tables, etc.
Operate various power tools and hand tools.
Procure tools and materials for various projects.
Comply with Departmental regulations and guidelines.
Perform carpentry tasks in a safe manner.
Perform renovation projects according to plans.
Effectively communicate with supervisors and other departments regarding clarification for completing assignments.
Respond to work orders in a timely manner.
Inspect and assess structures for safety and necessary repairs.
Consistently ensure that all construction and renovations conform to current ADA requirements.
Oversee trades helpers in various carpentry duties.
Paint and stain to complete and finish carpentry projects.
Drive Commission vehicles to haul co-workers, tools, and materials.
Minimum Qualifications
High School diploma or Certificate of General Educational Development (GED).
Completion of an approved carpentry apprentice program or four (4) years of progressively responsible carpentry experience.
Two (2) years of carpentry experience at the journey level.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total six (6) years.
Valid driver's license in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations. Driver's license must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit the employee's ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required by the position of assignment.
Depending on area of assignment, a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements may be required and must be in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations.
Pass Commission medical examination.
