The Washington Post is seeking a talented journalist to serve as a narrative accountability editor in its investigative unit, a role in which they will have the mission of shepherding impactful, revelatory reporting about national and local subjects in narrative form.?

This job requires someone with a track record of producing sophisticated narrative pieces and the ability to identify and pursue sharp investigative and accountability targets. The ideal candidate has a demonstrated ability to guide and shape compelling stories that use immersive reporting, keenly observed moments and exceptional writing to illuminate systemic failures and hold powerful people, institutions and interests to account. Experience shaping stories around elements of narrative writing such as character, scene and arc is a must. In addition, this editor must have strong instincts about how to drive accountability and investigative reporting with rigor, precision and authority, and how to connect propulsive narratives to topics of broad and urgent interest.

This editor should have a passion for mission-driven journalism and an instinct for identifying story ideas and reporting targets that will be of strong interest to a wide audience.

Responsibilities:?

• Identify the most relevant and ambitious narrative accountability stories about national and local topics in collaboration with other editors, both in the investigative unit and across the newsroom.

• Guide reporters to execute stories with the greatest degree of sophistication and refinement. Make complex sourcing decisions with the highest ethical standards.?

• Maintain rigor and excellence in story selection and framing.

• Tell stories in the most innovative ways to draw new audiences.

• Guiding and inspiring reporters to maintain momentum through reporting and writing challenges. 

• Collaborate closely with teams across the newsroom.

• Foster a supportive, empathetic work culture that furthers staff development and sets high expectations for achievement.

Preferred qualifications:?

• At least five years of experience producing exceptional narrative pieces as an editor or reporter.

• A track record of landing revelatory, high-impact investigative or accountability reporting as an editor or reporter.

• The ability to bring clarity and insight to deeply complex subjects.

• Dynamic leadership skills, including a collegial, collaborative spirit and a strong and respectful communication style.

• Management experience is a plus but not strictly required.

This position is based in our Washington, D.C., newsroom.
