DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Houston Public Library (HPL) is seeking experienced, innovative, team-oriented people to work as a Librarian II Youth in a Regional Library. Under the direction of the location manager, the Librarian II will provide leadership for the location in programming and outreach for youth 0-18 and their caregivers.
The Librarian II Youth duties will include:
Providing and modeling exceptional public service and making the library a welcoming space for all though day to day operations especially for youth and their families and caregivers.
Leading and supervising assigned staff including providing timely and objective feedback of performance and fostering the learning and development of staff.
Overseeing creative and innovative youth programs and library services including storytimes, after school programs, and other youth programs; May also advise on programming for other ages.
Engaging with the community through outreach and developing collaborative relationships with local community organizations to provide library services.
Training youth staff on best practices for storytime and other programs and outreach.
Interacting with customers at the customer service desk to find information and library materials.
Performing collection maintenance and provide reference and reader advisory services to library customers.
May serve as the person in charge in the absence of the manager.
Requires evenings and weekends (Saturday and Sundays) 8am-8:15pm shift work on a rotating basis.

WORKING CONDITIONS Position requires stooping and bending; lifting of library materials up to 20 pounds. Must be able to move freely throughout the library to file/retrieve library materials. Must be able to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS Requires a Master's of Library Science degree from a school accredited by American Library Association (ALA) and one (1) year of library experience
OR
Requires a Bachelor's degree plus 18 hours toward a Master's of Library Science degree from a school accredited by ALA and two (2) years of library experience. A Master's of Library Science degree must be completed within two (2) years from being hired into this classification.
LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
A valid Texas driver's license and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving (AP 2-2) preferred.
PREFERENCES
Strong knowledge of youth programs and collections and familiarity with Family Place libraries.
Skilled in personnel management, motivation, and supervision.
Ability to plan and organize work and collaborate with others.
Experience training other staff.
Experience working with people of diverse backgrounds.
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Knowledge of current versions of MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook), Sirsi Symphony.
Bilingual skills (Spanish/English) preferred.
