PRIMARY PURPOSE/GENERAL DESCRIPTION:  

Reporting to the Assistant Dean and Director of Campus Life, the Assistant Director of Residential Life (ADRL) will have primary responsibility for the oversight and support of the residential community, cultivating an environment that enhances and promotes the academic, personal, and social development & success of the residential student population. The Assistant Director will be instrumental in the development and execution of housing and operations, as well as residential curriculum initiatives that will build a sense of community and enhance the overall experience for the students at Scripps College. Working closely with the Assistant Dean and Director of Campus Life and the Assistant Director of Student Engagement, the ADRL will assist with the implementation of New Student Programs & Orientation (NSPO) initiatives. 

The ADRL will serve a pivotal role in developing practices that bring the Scripps community together as many students arrive to campus for the first time or require an adjustment period to settle back into their home away from home. 

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Staff Supervision

• Direct supervision of area coordinator and serve as a backup supervisor for the Resident Coordinators.
• Support current learning community initiatives and their sponsors; develop practices that sustain the program as well as enhance and/or increase the opportunities to our students.
• Develop leadership training for student leaders that address areas in support of community engagement and connectedness. This will be done in partnership with the Area Coordinator of Res Life and Student Engagement
• Conduct regular one-on-one meetings with professional and student staff.

Residential Vibrancy 

• Develop a residential curriculum that addresses the needs of students; coordinate and host/sponsor departmental events that align with the curriculum, collaborating with campus and consortium partners as needed.
• Work collaboratively with campus, consortial, and community partners to create programming for residential population.

Housing and Operations

• Manage our housing processes including but not limited to annual housing applications, room selection, new student placements, accommodation placements, and other room changes.
• Serve as a liaison with Star Rez, our housing software platform.
• Serve as a liaison with facilities and other campus partners as related to project and events directly involving or impacting our residential spaces. 

Administrative

• Engage in responsible fiscal stewardship of assigned budgets. 
• Ensure allocation of resources aligns with departmental and divisional objectives.
• Mediate roommate conflicts and disputes. 
• Maintain a regular and visible presence in the residential community, including office hours, contact with residents and attending residential programs/events.
• Assist with departmental and divisional processes, including but not limited to arrival and departure, orientation, and trainings.
• Develop complete proficiency in operating StarRez software platform.
• Active member in the New Student Programs & Orientation (NSPO) committee, supporting orientation programming and new student move-in.
• Work closely with the Division of Student Affairs and Dean of Student Office to support the safety, health, and well-being of Scripps students.
• Attend all monthly Residential Life Staff meetings, All-Staff meetings for Student Affairs, regular meetings with student staff and direct supervisor.
• Uphold college policies governing the residential community, as outlined in the Guide to Student Life.
• Active support for the College’s Principles of Community and Principles of Diversity in the performance of job duties.

Assessment

• Assist the Office of Institutional Research to develop and implement assessment model for departmental programs and initiatives.
• Assess current models of student leadership roles within the department to continue to evolve our programs in service of our student population needs.

Representation and Collaboration across the Claremont Consortium

• Represent Scripps in various professional associations and at designated professional conferences.
• Serve on college and consortium committees.
• Work with consortial partners to expand upon existing network of support for TCC student organizations.

On-Call System

• Serve in on-call rotation, acting as a first responder, responding to on-campus emergencies, campus crises and students in crisis, in addition to participating in education and training for on-call staff.
• Attend weekly on-call meetings.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS:

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred, or any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Minimum of five years’ experience working in a college or university setting; preference to those with residential college setting.

Experience with student staff supervision, residential communities, professional development, conflict resolution, crisis management and training

Experience in helping students develop cultural competencies and leadership skills.

HOURS & CLASSIFICATION AND STATUS:

This is a regular, full-time, 12-month, benefits-eligible, exempt level position. 

The regular hours of this position are Monday-Friday 8:00 am-5:00 pm. Hours may vary due to the needs of the College or department. May be required to work some evenings and weekends.

Staff is required to live in Scripps-provided housing (semi-furnished, two-bedroom unit within Scripps sponsored housing). Currently the provided housing is a tax-exempt benefit. Should the location of the provided housing change at any point, the housing may be considered taxable compensation to the employee based upon location.

Salary range: $67,000.00-$69,000.00 annualized. The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:  

Will supervise Area Coordinator and student employees.
