Located in the beautiful Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania, ESU’s proximity to New York City and Philadelphia provides convenient access to internships, careers and social activities. As the Resident Director, you will need to think creatively and be comfortable developing and leading a residential community. You will be an active member of the Residential Life, Housing & Dining (RLHD) team and will work closely with the Director to oversee all operations within the assigned to your building(s) to achieve departmental goals. As the Resident Director, you will mentor and serve as a role model for student workers and the residential community members. You will thrive in this role if you like combining your professional experience in student conduct or crisis intervention, and knowledge of higher education student affairs while practicing and integrating the Residential Life and Housing Core Values (Relationally Driven, Student-Centered, Learning Focused, and Know and Be Known). To be successful in this role, you must be an excellent communicator, able to transition quickly between priorities, and have strong empathy skills.
This is a 9-month, live-in position that includes 12-mounth housing. Summer employment opportunities are also available. Your normal hours will be Monday to Friday 8:00 am to 4: 30 pm, however hours/shifts are flexible based on the needs of the business and will frequently require nights and weekends. On-call hours are mandatory. When our team shows up for work, they are energized and motivated to succeed - all while being the most crucial piece to keeping the ESU operations humming.
What Will I Do At ESU? (AKA Essential Duties)
- Oversee a large population of student Resident Advisors, which includes conducting weekly meetings, training, onboarding, hiring, evaluations and feedback on performance, development, coaching, etc.
- Oversee the program budgets, manage key audits, roommate agreements, and other similar administrative tasks.
- Coordinate opening and closing of resident halls, including providing above-average customer service to students and their families during these events.
- Manage, coordinate, and maintain hall duty rotations, desk coverage, hall openings/closings, occupancy audits, room changes, pre-arrival, break room checks, and overall health and safety inspections. This also includes participating in rotating weekly on-call systems to train student Resident Advisors and residents on emergency response.
- Provide leadership during crisis in residence halls and in the greater campus community by assisting agencies such as ESU police, local fire/police depts., and other emergency services.
- Coach and mentor team members in appropriately confronting and documenting behavioral issues and concerns,and addressing student conflicts.
- Support and assist student staff with implementation and evaluation of programs within the Community Engagement Model. This includes fostering and promoting a positive community while serving as a diversity advocate and first-level campus resource making appropriate referrals to university resources.
- Train others on university rules, regulations, and policies; adjudicate student conduct matters as assigned; enforce as appropriate; consult with supervisor and/or Dean of Student Life regarding student and/or community safety concerns.
- Lead and serve on various departmental committees or initiatives as assigned or approved by supervisor. Committees and initiatives may include Recruitment and Selection, Training and Development, semester service initiatives, teaching RA Class sessions, Residence Hall Association, Moses Society or NRHH Advising. Participate on a minimum of one Campus Life and Inclusive Excellence Division committee.
- Perform related work as required.
What We're Looking For (AKA Qualifications)
- Bachelor's degree in student affairs, higher education administration, business, or other related field.
- 1+ year of post-graduate professional work experience.
- 1+ year of professional experience in student conduct and crisis intervention.
- Technical skills using Microsoft Office and student tracking databases (The Housing Director, Guardian, Maxient Banner, Star Fish) are preferred.
- Proven ability to lead and communicative in various forms clearly during change and emergencies.
- Understanding of individual and group development and educational interventions.
- Capability to manage relationships through collaboration.
- Experience with conflict de-escalation in a positive manner.
- Ability to effectively work within a high-energy work environment with various constant demands from a variety of sources.
- Able to read, write, and comprehend English; able to follow verbal instructions.
- Experience with Word, Excel, Teams required.
