DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The purpose of the Solid Waste Management Department (SWMD) is to provide solid waste services to the citizens of Houston through the collection, disposal, recycling of discarded material in a manner that is safe, efficient, environmentally sound, and cost-effective.
Drivers who are skilled in operating one of the following vehicles a rear-loader, a one arm automated vehicle and/or any other collection truck with hydraulic controls are preferred. May answer citizens' questions regarding proper content, packing weight, container type, pick-up times and placement of garbage containers. Based on the operational needs of the service center, the employee may be required to perform physical labor work from the "back" of the vehicle. Responsible for collecting and transporting garbage and discarded materials to specified dump sites for disposal. Will be responsible for performing a daily pre, mid, and post trip bumper to bumper maintenance related vehicle safety inspection and any other operative service duties such as checking fluid levels, tire air pressure, and the daily cleaning of the vehicle at the end of each shift. This position is also considered an essential worker and frontline responder and requires mandatory overtime on scheduled workdays, weekends, holidays, and in response to disaster recovery efforts. Completes, and submits records on check-in times, number and tonnage of each load, amount of fuel used and odometer readings on the vehicle. Performs physical labor in collecting household recyclables, bulk waste and garbage from City curbs. Must provide own safety shoes. May perform special assignments as directed. An acceptable clear driving record is required.
WORKING CONDITIONSThe position requires extensive, near-continuous physical exertion such as repeated lifting of very heavy objects (more than 80 pounds), deep bending, climbing steps and/or assuming awkward positions. Frequent exposures to extreme levels of air pollution, noise pollution, chemical gases and substances, and/or contagious diseases or physical trauma conditions of a short-term disabling nature, such as broken bones or temporary loss of sight or hearing. Requires the ability to make coordinated gross motor movements in response to changing external stimuli within moderately demanding tolerances; or the ability to make coordinated eye/hand movements on a patterned response space within low tolerance demands with no real speed requirements. There are routine exposures to significant levels of heat, cold, moisture and rain.

PAY GRADE - 11
