THE POSITION
Under general supervision, to examine damaged vehicles and transit buses and estimate cost of repairs; to repair damaged bodies and body parts in accordance to repair manuals using hand tools and power tools; reads design specifications; performs fabrication and modification tasks; and to perform related work as required.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Examines damaged vehicles or transit buses for dents, scratches, frame damage, broken glass and other areas requiring repair replacement or repainting; reads inspection reports, reviews instructions and blueprints to determine type of repair and tools required; estimates cost of repair based on familiarity with standard parts, costs, and labor rates; reads design specifications or examines sample parts to determine fabrication procedures and machines and tools required; installs, replaces, or repairs parts such as body panels; doors, interior and exterior trim; removes rivets and other fasteners to facilitate removal of defective part using a power drill and punch; reinstalls repaired or replacement parts for subsequent riveting or welding using clamps and wrenches; positions and secures bonded structure in fixture or bonding form; scribes around repair area and cuts out defective or damaged section using power tools and equipment; welds with gas and arc equipment to replace part to frame; aligns frames after repairing; repairs damaged fiberglass bodies using pneumatic tools; prepares vehicles surfaces for paint application by removing parts, masking areas and sanding; paints vehicles surfaces through spray application or other means; fabricates and assembles metal products; maintains the shop and work area in a clean, orderly and neat condition; maintains record of work performed and parts used; provides emergency road service to disabled vehicles as required.
REQUIREMENTS
Possession of an appropriate California driver's license. Candidate must obtain their California Class B permit within 2 weeks of employment and obtain their California Class B license within 6 months of employment. Passing probation is contingent upon obtaining a Class B license.
Possession of a personal toolbox, basic hand tool set, and air tools.
Training and Experience: Any combination of training and experience which would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Work Background: Three years of progressively responsible and varied journey level work experience performing skilled paint and body repair work on bus, automotive, and other power driven equipment.
Knowledge of:
Advanced techniques and methods of surface preparation, painting and application of materials related to vehicle bodywork.
Tools, materials, and equipment used in maintaining and repairing body and chassis damaged vehicles and related equipment.
Fabrication procedures.
Principles and methods of gas and electrical welding.
Recordkeeping methods and procedures.
Safe work practices.
