Job Summary:
Under immediate supervision of Orthopedic Supervisor and/or departmental physicians with functional guidance from senior orthopedic technician, Orthopedic Technician I or Orthopedic Technician II, assists the physicians with all routine orthopedic procedures to include: applying casts, splints, bandages and ready-made braces, furnishing, adjusting and instructing patients in the use of various orthopedic devices, setting up to maintaining orthopedic traction.
Essential Responsibilities:
Under immediate supervision of the Orthopedic Supervisor, departmental physician, or Orthopedic Technician I or Orthopedic technician II, applies most types of casts, splints, braces, bandages and slings by determining proper positioning, angulations and type of device according to the instruction of the physician and predetermined orthopedic procedures and techniques.
Under supervision, attends to patients during follow-up visits by checking cast, splints, etc., for such conditions as comfort and circulation problems, trimming, removing and reapplying casts, splints, etc., as ordered by physician.
Sets up traction apparatus as directed, noting type of traction, positioning and weight to be used, checks condition of inpatients on a regular basis to determine possible problems, notifies physician as necessary and makes adjustments as directed.
Assists physician and the Orthopedic Tech in Operating Room with application of casts, wound debridement and pin insertion, applies cast as directed, positions and preps patient, assembles necessary equipment and instruments, applies proper dressing as directed, passes instruments and assists physician as directed, and observes sterile technique for operating room procedures.
Furnishes, fits and instructs patients in the use of crutches, canes, and other devices, documents charges on standard form.
Maintains and ensures operational readiness of equipment and supplies.
Maintains clean and orderly ward area according to establishes procedures.
Promotes, ensures, and improves customer service to internal/external customers by demonstrating skills which are consistent with the organizations philosophy of providing extraordinary customer relations and quality service.
Set up necessary specialty equipment prior to start of procedures (i.e. fluoroscan, fracture table, etc.).
Ortho Tech Apprentice may act as second assist in the operating room once declared competent in any orthopedic or podiatry case under the guidance of the Orthopedic Technician II, the Registered Nurse First Assist or the Physician Assistant.
Ortho Tech Apprentice are precluded from working in the emergency room and from working independently in the operating room.
Ortho tech Apprentice will work in the clinics under the direction of an Orthopedic Tech I and/or an Orthopedic Tech II.
Records and Patient Information - Record and chart patient data, completing all forms and records required. Verify consent form for proper procedure and extremity. Ensures proper charges have been documented. Complete diagnostic examination requisitions. Complete medical and prescription history forms and records. Record and maintain patient treatment data. Arranges necessary appointments per department guidelines. Answers telephone and serves as a resource to personnel in casting and splinting. Review patient x-rays and charts to evaluate patients and identify significant conditions. Collects and labels all specimens; accurately completes appropriate laboratory slips, and transports specimens per policy.
Equipment and Instruments - Re-stock and prepare procedure, cast and examination rooms. Set-up and clean instruments and surgical trays. Retrieve and deliver and sterilize necessary items. Deliver, assemble/disassemble equipment and instruments, while maintaining appropriate inventory control. Maintain traction equipment and supplies. Perform or arrange for repair or adjustments to equipment and instruments. Ensure equipment is available for procedures and examinations. Calibrate and adjust equipment in preparation for and during procedures (i.e. CPM machine, tourniquets, etc.). Maintain proper inventory control.

Additional Requirements:
·Applicants will be required to successfully complete a Kaiser Permanente Orthopedic Training Program.
·All certifications, including cards of completion and/or advanced certification must be obtained in accordance with experience requirements as specified by the department.
