The Rendering and Wastewater Treatment Superintendent manages and oversees the rendering operations and wastewater treatment plant. This includes ensuring compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations and maintaining optimal plant performance to produce high-quality effluent discharge and solids processing. The role also involves planning, scheduling, and coordinating maintenance activities, managing budgets, and analyzing data to improve operational efficiency.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Manage daily rendering operations and wastewater treatment plant performance, ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements.
- Achieve area KPIs and financial performance goals.
- Fill in as an operator when necessary.
- Motivate, counsel, and direct subordinates, evaluating their performance and ensuring clear communication of responsibilities and limits of authority.
- Prepare and manage the operating budget for the rendering department and wastewater treatment plant.
- Oversee the preventative maintenance program for all plant equipment, coordinating with the maintenance department for necessary spare parts.
- Ensure adherence to safety procedures and proper use of safety equipment in the plant.
- Handle the disposal of universal and hazardous waste from relevant plants, maintaining necessary records and manifests.
- Maintain quality standards for wastewater discharge as set by regulatory authorities and internal policies.
- Manage rendering and offal screening processes to meet customer specifications.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Supervise, train, organize, assign, and coordinate the work of wastewater treatment and rendering plant staff.
- Develop and manage functional budgets and track performance metrics.
- Identify and implement operational improvements to increase efficiency and reduce costs.
- Maintain effective communication with the Manager of Environmental Services and communicate departmental goals to subordinates.
- Provide training, mentoring, coaching, and leadership to help subordinates achieve their goals.
- Foster and promote company culture and values.
Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements include:
- Education and Experience: Associate's degree (A.A.) or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school plus five years of relevant experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be a PADEP-certified wastewater treatment operator and proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence and effectively present information.
- Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
- Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
