Mechanics Bank is currently searching for a Mortgage and Consumer Lending Underwriter (Mortgage Underwriter) to join our team. This role is part of a team responsible for underwriting and approving single-family Mortgages, Home Equity products, and Consumer loans. This includes the review and analysis of required documentation, and direct interaction with loan originators, processors, loan servicing, title companies, legal and compliance, and other bank personnel. Candidates should bring a positive attitude, applicable experience and skills, and a working knowledge of the laws and regulations applicable to Residential Mortgage, Home Equity, and Consumer lending.
What you will be doing:
Review and approve Mortgage, HELOC, and Consumer loan applications generated from retail originations, referrals from internal divisions, correspondents, and bulk acquisitions, per the Bank’s Portfolio underwriting guidelines and Agency parameters.
Review and analyze loan file for risk and documentation– including credit, income, employment, assets, appraisals, title, tax transcripts, hazard and flood insurance, and special documentation required for properties vested to trusts or LLCs.
Understand and implement the Bank’s lending philosophy by applying a detailed and common-sense approach to facilitate growth of the Bank’s responsible, safe, and sound lending portfolio.
Provide insight to foster continuous improvement of procedures, guidelines, and technology applications.
Act within approval and exceptions authorities and protocol as defined by Credit Administration, and consistently meet quality control standards and risk standards.
Participate as needed in internal and external audits, and compliance and regulatory reviews.
Assure adherence to current bank policies and procedures, and applicable compliance laws and regulations.
Interface with loan origination, processing, operations, credit administration, and other personnel in a positive, professional and constructive manner.
Who you are:
4 year degree preferred, but additional experience will be considered in lieu of education.
5 years of relevant banking/lending experience required.
3 years of underwriting conforming & non-conforming residential mortgages required.
A combination of Agency, Jumbo, QM, non-QM, and HELOC lending experience is ideal. Prior experience evaluating WISH loans or other residential grant programs is a plus.
Solution oriented underwriter with knowledge of loan origination, processing, closing, and funding to assure a seamless customer experience.
Experience underwriting self-employed applicants with complex financial statements/tax returns is essential, including use of tax analysis worksheets. • Proficiency with Encompass LOS is highly preferred.
Able to understand and interpret loan file documentation - including credit, income, employment, assets, appraisals, title, tax transcripts, hazard and flood insurance, and special documentation required for properties vested to trusts or LLCs.
Experience utilizing third party compliance, fraud, and tax validation reports.
Able to communicate with loan originators and processors regarding clearing underwriting conditions and pending documentation.
Have a strong understanding of current compliance laws and regulations including, but not limited to: Fair Lending requirements, CFPB guidance, Reg. Z, Reg. B and TRID, Bank Secrecy Act (BSA), OFAC, USA Patriot Act, Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, Anti-Money Laundering (AML).
Have excellent attention to details, strong organizational skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
Able to work both independently and with a team, and comfortable working within a growing business unit and a fluid work environment.
Must have strong quantitative and technical skills and proficiency in all Microsoft Office products, including Excel, MSWord, Adobe Products, and an interactive Virtual Desktop Interface (VDI) environment.

Pay: $40-55.00 hourly
Final compensation package will be determined by the work experience, education, and/or skill level of the applicant along with internal equity and alignment with geographic market data.
