Overview
Postbaccalaureate Research Associate, College of Osteopathic Medicine, Department of Foundational Biomedical Sciences. Under supervision of the PI, Dr. Tamira Elul, the Research Associate will be responsible for managing overall operations and carrying out experiments in a laboratory studying developmental neurobiology, using Xenopus laevis frog embryos as a model. The candidate must be able to work both independently and in collaboration with the PI and students in laboratory (as well as with additional collaborating PIs (Drs. Miller and Rajagopalan).
The RA appointment will be supported by an NIH NIDA R15 grant whose aims are to knockdown the Cannabinoid Receptor, CB1R, by morpholino expression in optic neurons in Xenopus laevis embryos and investigate the interaction between CB1R and Wnt/Cadherin signaling in optic axonal morphogenesis in vivo. Work will also involve developing an optic neuron culture model to investigate interactions between hERG and Wnt/Cadherin signaling in optic axonal morphology and electrical activity. Must be able to make a 2 year commitment.
Responsibilities
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES: are those work assignments which are predominant, regular and recurring.
- Duties include coordinating BSL1 laboratory management and equipment maintenance.
- Assist with and supervise multiple research projects.
- Assist others with and perform lab techniques.
- Work closely with team members to provide effective solutions to support research objectives.
- Facilitate effective communication among team members and between departments.
- Establish lab procedures, create, and manage lab-related documentation.
- Laboratory maintenance.
- Experimental techniques include molecular biology, embryology, microinjection, electroporation, dissection and plating, fixation, immunostaining, electrophysiology, fluorescence imaging, morphometric analysis or images, data spreadsheet management.
- Other tasks as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES (if applicable): should reflect who the employee is supervising and what the expectations are.
- Train MSMHS and summer research students in laboratory techniques

Qualifications
- College degree: Bachelors in Biology, Neurobiology, Biophysics, Biochemistry, Bioengineering, Cell Biology.
- Effective data handling, document control, and technical bench skills
- Strong problem-solving, training, team building, and mentoring abilities
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Exceptional organizational skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
