Job Summary:
The Transportation Planner is responsible for the coordination of all inbound and outbound shipments for the assigned production plant and distribution center and warehouses. Effectively making sure that all customer orders get delivered on time while controlling freight costs.
This position reports to the Sr. Transportation Manager and also takes direction from the Logistics Manager.
Primary Duties:
Review all customer orders in our Transportation Management System (TMS) and effectively plan the shipment of those orders. Also plan any interplant shipment that needs to be scheduled.
Decide the delivery mode (TL, IML, LTL, Parcel) for every shipment while reviewing the specifics of each order (# of pallets, due date, freight cost).
Combine customer orders together to maximize the number of pallets shipped on each truck while minimizing the freight cost for each order.
Utilize Pool shipments to specific LTL locations to capture freight savings while maximizing the number of pallets shipped on each truck.
Utilize the Transportation Management System (TMS) to effectively plan all shipments. Making sure all the freight data is maintained in the system for every shipment.
Create daily shipping schedules for each shipping location. Level load shipments if warehouse capacity becomes an issue.
Responsible for the coordination of any return shipment caused by overages or customer refusal of product.
Follow up daily on all scheduled shipments to ensure they were picked up from each facility. If there is a carrier failure work on resolving the issue with the carrier.
Act as first point of contact for the carriers.
Utilize the route guide to assign carriers to each load that is assigned. If necessary request spot quotes from carriers for lanes without contracted rates. Understand the impact of all decisions made and how they impact freight costs.
Required Background and Skills:
Strong computer skills in MS Office applications and experience using Transportation Management System. Us of Mercury Gate System a plus.
Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
Strong knowledge of transportation practices and procedures.
Qualifications
High school diploma required, associate degree preferred
1-3 years of experience in Traffic and Transportation
