Facilities Management Division: The Automotive/Equipment Mechanic II will be part of the Facilities Management Division. This Division of 118 staff provides for the care and maintenance of the Department’s physical assets including facilities, pavement, fleet, and major building systems. With a budget over $13 million dollars, the division is responsible for facility condition assessments, major and minor maintenance programs, and serves as the primary support to the Department’s Capital Improvement Projects (CIP). The division strives to achieve a balance between the upkeep of aging facilities and new construction by integrating a number of CIP and major maintenance projects into the daily work program each year.
Fleet Services The Fleet Services Section consists of 30 staff located throughout Montgomery County. Staff include supervisors, mechanics and parts department employees that are responsible for vehicle acquisition, centralized maintenance and repair for all motorized equipment and oversight of 12 fueling stations Department-wide. Fleet operates out of the Green Farm Maintenance Facility in Gaithersburg plus 9 satellite maintenance yard/repair shops. The inventory of Vehicles is over 500 and Equipment is over 3,000 pieces, managed utilizing a system called Faster. The system was recently upgraded to a cloud-based system. Fleet provides specifications, bid and purchasing of vehicles and equipment for replacement each year. Mechanics perform repair and preventative maintenance to vehicles and equipment daily and contract out specialized repair work as needed.

Examples of Important Duties
What the job will involve:
Major and Minor Repairs of Vehicles, Trailers, Mowing, and Construction Equipment
Conducts repairs on equipment correctly by established timeframes and standards.
Complete and file preventative maintenance checklists and tasks.
Annually complete DOT inspection sheets required by Federal standards.
Utilize FASTER fleet management system for direct and indirect labor, updating work orders, coding maintenance, and verifying parts and materials.
Perform emergency road service repairs
Maintain Parts/Equipment Inventory
Conduct controlled asset inventory on an annual basis.
Determine correct parts number for specialty equipment.
Place parts orders to stockroom.
Important Skills and Characteristics
Collaborative with a strong work ethic.
Ability to approach repairs on new and unknown pieces of equipment.
Attention to detail.
Ability to inspect equipment to locate and diagnose malfunctions.
Preferred Qualifications
Considerable knowledge of standard mechanical practices and methods.
Knowledge of operation and repair of internal combustion engines, transmissions, electrical and cooling systems, and other automotive components.
Efficient use of tools, materials, and methods used in automotive and motorized equipment.
Knowledge of control, braking and lubricating systems.
Minimum Qualifications
High School diploma or Certificate of General Educational Development (GED).
Completion of an approved mechanical apprentice program; or four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in maintenance and repair on automotive and/or heavy motor equipment.
Two (2) years of experience at the journey level.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total six (6) years.
Valid driver's license in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations. Driver's license must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit the employee's ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required by the position of assignment.
Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements within 12 months of employment.
Pass Commission medical examination.
