The USC department of Mailing and Material Management Services is seeking a Materials Specialist to join its team!
About the Opportunity
The Materials Specialist processes gas cylinder orders for delivery and pickup to various university departments across multiple campuses, including University Park, Health Sciences, Alhambra, downtown LA offices, and other locations. Other duties may include cylinder maintenance and inspection. This is a safety-sensitive position covered by United States Department of Transportation (DOT) guidelines for drivers of commercial vehicles and drivers transporting hazardous waste.
Accountabilities:
Processes gas cylinders orders for delivery and pick up to university departments.
Delivers and picks up cylinders. Obtains electronic signature on handheld device.
Ensures accurate placarding of the truck exterior to match the transported gases for safe delivery in compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations.
Performs daily inventory of gases to ensure cylinders have been stored in their respective flammable or nonflammable area and tightly secured on cylinder racks.
Counts and records quantities and type of gas to ensure actual load from vendor complies with shipping documents.
Collects and delivers all classes of mail and other materials, including palletized goods, bulk or heavy items and crated materials. Makes deliveries and pickups as required. Sorts, researches, and processes all mail, packages and other items. Processes UPS and FedEx and other shipments using software for online shipping. Operates university vehicles as assigned for delivery and pick up. Verifies merchandise shipments received against purchase orders and/or packing slips. Checks merchandise for possible damage.
Performs other related duties as assigned or requested. The university reserves the right to add or change duties at any time.

The ideal candidate for the position of Materials Specialist meets the following preferred qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications
All candidates for the position of Materials Specialist must meet the following minimum qualifications:
High school or equivalent; however, combined work experience and education as substitute for minimum education
1 year of experience
Requires frequent bending, reaching, climbing, and heavy physical effort (up to 150 pounds)
Ability to operate a forklift and other material handling equipment and to use scales, postage meters, UPS and FedEx machines and other similar machines
Familiar with related US DOT regulations on Hazardous Material and Waste transport; general understanding of different types of flammable and non-flammable compressed gases and liquids
Requires current valid California driver’s license
Must have current valid H (Hazardous Materials) endorsement on driver’s license
Internal candidates within USC Mailing and Materials Management Services: must already be actively in the process of obtaining an H (Hazardous Materials) endorsement on their California driver’s license at the time of application submission and must obtain the endorsement prior to start.

The hourly rate range for this position is $23.62 - $24.50. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state, and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.
The work schedule for this position is Monday through Friday from 8:30 A.M. to 5:00 P.M (37.5 hours per week work schedule). Please note that work schedules/hours may change at any time, to include working overtime and weekends as needed, to accommodate business needs.
