The State Highway Administration’s (SHA) Office of Highway Development – Design Technical Services Division is currently recruiting for a Senior Engineer (Transportation Design Engineer V) in Baltimore City. This position is open to anyone who meets the minimum and selective qualifications listed below by the closing date. This is a position specific recruitment. The resulting list of eligible candidates will be used to fill this vacancy or function only. You will need to reapply for any future recruitment conducted for this job classification.
Nature of Work: The main purpose of this position is to function as a Senior Engineer and Team Leader in the Design Technical Services Division for the Office of Highway Development (OHD). As a licensed professional engineer, this position will be directly responsible for managing the review of transportation projects for conformance with highway design standards and guidelines including American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO)- A Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets and The Federal Highway Administration’s ten controlling criteria. This position will oversee a team of licensed and non-licensed engineers performing these engineering reviews for all applicable SHA projects. The position will be responsible for the review of design exceptions and will provide recommendation for approval. The position may manage SHA staff, consultants, projects, assets, funds, and/or programs. This position may also lead trainings and develop training materials for engineers and construction personnel, serve on committees and participate in various efforts as a subject matter expert.

Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Possession of a Maryland Professional Engineer license, in the appropriate option, is required. Evidence of license must be presented at the time of appointment.
Experience: One (1) year of experience managing engineering projects as a licensed, professional engineer.
Selective Qualification: Two (2) years of experience must have involved highway design projects in conformance with the AASHTO Green Book.

Selective qualifications are utilized when the position requires specific or additional bona fide occupational qualifications (i.e., knowledge, skill, or abilities).
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
The ideal candidate will possess the following:
• Experience with managing multiple concurrent tasks
• Experience with training, and mentoring engineering staff
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Licenses & Certifications
Candidates must possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the state of Maryland.
