The City of Montebello is seeking customer service driven, and motivated individuals who are interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement to join the Police Department as a Police Cadet. The philosophy of the Cadet program is to prepare the Cadet for future employment in law enforcement. To accomplish this goal and to give Cadet a broader perspective of police work, the Cadet will work various assignments within the department. This is temporary, unclassified, part-time position. The position is exempt from Civil Service Rules and Regulations; therefore, Police Cadets may be discharged by the Chief of Police without a right of appeal.
General parking enforcement and issuance of parking citations Performing traffic control Preparing reports for impounding of vehicles Investigating and writing a selected variety of crime and traffic collision reports when no suspect is present Collecting and preserving evidence Appearing and testifying in court Providing information and assistance to the public at the front counter Answering telephone requests for police services Collecting monies for public requests of documents Performing clerical assignments and support for department personnel Processing reports and maintaining records and files Preparing misdemeanor cases for filing with the District Attorney Serving subpoenas Fingerprinting Performing routine jail functions such as custodial checks on inmates, searches, booking, fingerprinting, and other necessary jail duties Performing crossing guard duties Conducting tours of city facilities Maintaining police vehicles Performing other related duties as assigned Patrol city parks and enforce state and municipal laws
Other Job Related Duties: Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned. Job related and Essential Functions: Knowledge of: Modern offices practices, methods, and computer equipment and software. English usage, spelling, vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation. Safe driving principles and practices.
Ability to: Learn pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, Penal and Vehicle codes and regulations including administrative and departmental policies and procedures and police terminology. Maintain files alphabetically, numerically, or by subject matter. Handle multiple concurrent tasks with numerous interruptions. Utilize independent judgment involving the interpretation of instructions and performance of assigned duties. Assist the public with diplomacy and tact. Deal constructively with conflict. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Must be available to work nights, weekends and holidays. Ability to lift 50lbs
Experience: No law enforcement experience is required, experience as Police Explorer or equivalent is desirable. Education/Training: High school graduation or GED or CHSPE equivalent. Currently enrolled in an accredited college or university (Accrediting organization must be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education) and carrying six or more units per semester, or nine or more units per quarter, with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5. If a Police Cadet, prior to reaching their 24th birthday, fails to be appointed as a Law Enforcement Recruit, or other position within the Police Department, that Police Cadet will be released from employment. Police Cadets who complete an Associate's Degree or Bachelor's Degree may remain in the program until their 24th birthday.
832 PC Laws of Arrest: Applicants if selected and hired must have the ability to successfully complete an 832PC Laws of Arrest course. Age Requirement: Must be between the ages of 18 through 22 at time of appointment. Driver's License: Applicant must possess a valid California driver's license.
Examination: Candidates deemed most qualified will be invited to an oral board interview. Failure of the interview exam will remove the candidate from further consideration. Candidates who successfully pass the oral will have to complete a full background investigation which will include a polygraph and a medical exam. A Command Oral Exam will also be had prior to appointment. Oral Board Interview: Candidates who successfully pass will be invited to an Oral Board Interview. Candidates who do not pass the Oral Board Interview will be disqualified from the hiring and selection process. Those who have achieved the highest passing scores will be invited to participate in the background process. Background: All applicants who successfully pass the oral board interview and polygraph exam and are selected to move forward in the hiring and selection process must complete an extensive background investigation. The background will follow the California Peace Officer Standards and Training (CA. POST) guidelines. Failure to pass a background will result in disqualification from the hiring and selection process.
Medical Exam: As part of the hiring and selection process applicants must participate in and pass a medical exam.
