A Brief Overview
The Senior Claims Reinsurance Analyst role will work on-site (or hybrid no less than three days per week on-site) at either our Chicago, New York City, or San Antonio office. It reports to the Vice President of Reinsurance Claims who is in New York City.
This multifaceted reinsurance claims position involves both ceded and assumed reinsurance responsibilities, with an emphasis on third-party reinsurance reporting, billing, and collection activities for Argo’s US Property, Casualty, and Professional Liability claims. The role is integrated with a larger team that specializes in handling complex, long-tail liability claims, including claims under assumed reinsurance contracts. Key responsibilities will include reinsurance contract coverage analysis; validation of reinsurance cession data; ensuring adherence to contract terms and best practices; in addition, provide support to the Ceded Reinsurance and Reinsurance Accounting team during the renewal process, reinsurance claims audits, special projects, and financial reporting. The role requires strong attention to detail, good analytical and communication skills, demonstrate problem solving skills, with the ability to make sound decisions and recommendations in a timely and result oriented manner.
How You Will Make an Impact:
- Review underlying claim matters and coverage files to determine if claims are reportable to reinsurers in accordance with reinsurance treaty contracts and facultative certificates to ensure timely reporting, billing, and collections.
- Work with Reinsurance Accounting to assist with the billing of reinsurance recoverables and cash calls (when needed). In addition, provide guidance on the calculation of reinsurance recoverables, determine any cession corrections, and application of treaty clauses with regards to insuring coverage, and AAD’s, etc.
- Manage diary and work-flow tasks in a proactive manner, to ensure timeliness of communications to reinsurers, brokers, and other interested parties.
- Keep management informed of any questions, concerns, or potential issues regarding ceded claim issues. Review applicable reinsurance case law, industry custom & practice, and sound judgment when evaluating complex contract issues, including prompt attention and escalation of disputes or other issues that may impact results.
- Support the Ceded Re treaty placement team with submission preparation by providing ground up loss runs and additional loss reports which appropriately aggregate risks or claims as provided for in each treaty.
- Assist other team members (as needed) with the handling of assumed reinsurance and/or direct claims, including, but not limited to legacy, run-off business. Contribute to the analysis of any commutation efforts, including valuation, analysis, and negotiations with reinsurers, within defined authority limits. Makes recommendations to management as needed.
- Monitor monthly and quarterly activity reports and recommend appropriate actions or steps to improve financial and operational performance.
- Assist with special ad-hoc claims projects, policy search efforts, and historical account/claim reviews (i.e., erosion of aggregate limits).
- Collaborate with reinsurance stakeholders on other process improvement opportunities to reinsurance workflow and systems.
What We Need:
- At least five years’ experience in reinsurance claims handling. Experience managing direct claims may be considered.
- Bachelor's degree or four additional years of related reinsurance experience beyond the minimum experience required above may be substituted in lieu of a degree. ARe, CPCU, designations are a plus.
- Technical expertise related to reinsurance contract interpretation and assessing claims subject to applicable reinsurance.
- Experience managing direct claims related to asbestos, environmental liability and other types of toxic tort and legacy claims is highly preferred. Any knowledge of insurance claim settlement principles, practices and procedures is preferred.
- Demonstrate and understand the mechanisms available for resolving disputes (e.g. arbitration and mediation) when these are used.
- Must have good communication, negotiation and presentation skills, and the ability to effectively interact with all levels of the company's internal and external business partners.
- Ability to regularly exercise discretion and independent judgment with respect to matters of significance.?This role primarily faces problems and issues that require an understanding of a broader set of issues.
- Must have good business acumen (i.e. understand how an insurance company works and makes money, including how this role impacts both Argo Group and our customer's ability to be profitable).
- Must have strong attention to detail, analytical skills, demonstrated problem solving skills, and ability to prioritize multiple projects and tasks.
- Ability to work independently and develop creative solutions to workflow and other operational challenges is needed.
- Exhibit natural and intellectual curiosity in order to consistently explore and consider all options and is not governed by conventional thinking. Use creativity to resolve unique and challenging business problems.

Physical Demands

The base salary range provided below will be commensurate with candidate experience. In addition to base salary, all employees are eligible for an annual bonus based on company and individual performance as well as a generous benefits package.
New York City Pay Range:
$116,200—$138,300 USD
