We have an exciting new opportunity for an experienced Materials Operations & Logistics Manager to join our team in Rockville, MD. In this role you’ll provide leadership and management over Rockville Biopharm inbound/outbound distribution and logistics, materials receipt/sampling/inspection, weigh/dispense, materials delivery to manufacturing and bulk drug substance (BDS) freeze-down/storage/shipment to ensure excellent customer service, effective inventory management, and compliance with safety and GMP standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and manage a staff of approximately 20 employees. Recruit, train and develop a high performing, engaged and flexible team capable of meeting expectations, and responding to future business requirements
- Accountable for the staff development and performance management planning for all direct and indirect reports.
- Accountable for inbound and outbound logistics, receiving/putaway, inspection, sampling, inventory management, weigh/dispense, distribution, drug substance freeze-down/storage, and outbound shipping operations inclusive of samples/BDS
- Liaise with central support functions to develop and implement strategies to improve CoGs, optimize working capital, optimize storage capability and capacity, and mitigate distribution risks
- Responsible for identifying, designing and implementing continuous improvement initiatives in a fast-paced business environment that meet GSK global initiatives
- Develop, maintain, and implement systems and procedures that facilitate an effective flow of materials and information which directly impacts manufacturing service levels and storage strategies
- Responsible for assuring full compliance against all appropriate manufacturing regulations such as local policy and procedures, GSK QMS and cGMP. Collaborate with Quality to expedient review and closure of deviations, corrective actions, change controls, internal QA audit execution/findings and internal safety audit findings
- Sustain a safety, quality compliance and inspection ready culture which is driven by an engaged workforce
- Business line accountability for inventory management applications (e.g. SAP/M-ERPs) including business process implementation of future upgrades
- Responsible to ensure staff, product and equipment safety across the planning, materials, and logistics functions. Maintain compliant operations against all required GSK EHS/OSHA standards and all applicable environmental regulations (local, state, and federal)
- Accountable for developing and maintaining BDS storage and control strategy including maintaining a robust emergency response plan for drug substance inventories exceeding $100M
- Forecast and analyze warehousing and storage capacity evaluating both internal and external supplier capabilities and implement long-range strategies that support the growth of the biopharm business
- Collaborate with Move Products for international and the TOC for domestic on design, controls and execution of outbound shipments of high-value biopharm drug substance
- Develop and adhere to financial objectives by managing departments OPEX budget, scheduling expenditures, and analyzing variances
- Accountable for ensuring distribution risk assessments are executed per shipping validation protocols
- Performance manage third party logistic provider responsible for BDS transportation to secondary sites
- Embed a continuous improvement mindset and ensure staff embeds the GSK Production System to drive sustainable systems
Why you?
Basic Qualifications:
We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:
- BS/BA Degree
- Minimum of 7 years of warehouse, logistics, management, production, materials and inventory control experience in the pharmaceutical industry.
- Supervisory and/or managerial experience
Preferred Qualifications:
If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:
- Master’s Degree preferred
- Demonstrated ability to define best practices for sites and driving adoption of these best practices
- Coaching and mentoring of other staff in this and other areas
- Ability to develop and present long term strategies across complex businesses
- This position must be skilled in warehouse activities in relation to dispatch and 3rd Party Logistics Providers, shipping routes, and activities around the global network including shipping validation.
- Work closely with Planning, Procurement Site Liason, Manufacturing to improve supply performance while reducing cost
- Capacity planning, Material requirements planning and Vendor Schedule issue
- Input and adherence to Inventory Policy/Working capital initiatives
- This position must be capable of managing support of multiple manufacturing lines
- Support Test/Release cycle time reduction initiatives, in addition to COGs reduction and process improvement initiatives
- Inventory obsolescence and scrap management
- Materials Operations and Warehouse team motivation, competence and flexibility
- Implement GPS mindset & tools
