You'll be responsible for:
Checking plans and specifications for the construction, alteration, and repair of residential, commercial and industrial buildings and structures and fire protection systems.
Ensuring that plans meet the requirements of related fire and life safety codes, regulations and restrictions and indicating corrections where required.
Preparing comprehensive correction lists, reviewing plans and specifications for fire code requirements to verify adequacy of water supply, sprinkler and alarm systems, fire resistance of materials, and adequacy of egress and fire exits.
Maintaining files and records of the specifications, calculations and other pertinent information related to submitted plans.
Consulting with engineers, architects, contractors or the public to discuss problems with initial plans and required changes, including driving to job sites to view conditions and evaluate problems to be solved by design plans and specifications.
Reviewing the work of outside plan check engineers and consultants.
Responding to verbal or written inquiries and providing technical assistance to engineers, architects, contractors, other City personnel and the public. This includes interpreting and explaining requirements and restrictions relative to building and fire codes, ordinances, regulations, policies and procedures and developing alternative methods to comply with those requirements and restrictions.
Reviewing and determining fees associated with development projects; assigning building and street addresses.
Coordinating plan check activities with other City functions and outside agencies, including backing up the Counter Plans Examiner when absent or busy.
Conducting field inspections for technical operations, inspecting and observing removal of underground storage tanks, public display fireworks and similar explosives.
Working with Community Development to develop additional fire protection services.

ARE YOU QUALIFIED
Education and/or Experience:
Graduation from an accredited college with a Bachelor's degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Architecture, or a related field and three years of increasingly responsible experience in fire prevention/inspection or any combination of training and experience that provides the desired knowledge and abilities.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of principles and practices of fire protection engineering; fire prevention and inspection methods; fire and life safety systems; related laws, ordinances, rules, regulations, policies and procedures, including general knowledge of handicapped access requirements and California Energy Commission Standards of Title 24; basic principles and practices of general building, electrical, plumbing and construction methods and materials. Ability to read and interpret plans, blueprints and specifications; interpret and apply related laws, ordinances, rules, regulations, policies and procedures; conduct field investigations; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
Special Requirements:
Possession of or ability to obtain an appropriate California driver's license and a satisfactory driving record.
Possession of a Uniform Fire Code Inspector Certificate issued by the ICBO.
Possession of a Plan Examiner Certificate issued by the ICBO.
