Position Summary
The Mechanical Engineer / Project Manager is highly valued and is relied on to provide mechanical engineering expertise on major projects occurring on campus including the plants, utility distribution system, existing buildings, new buildings, and major renovations.
This role is classified as an essential position, requiring on-site presence to effectively carry out its vital functions. Per Rice policy 440, work arrangements may be subject to change.
This position is considered essential during a campus emergency. The incumbent in this position is expected to report to campus, provide the essential services designated, and work under the overall direction of the Crisis Management Team for the duration of a campus emergency.
This is a full-time, benefits-eligible position and the hiring range is from $83,000 to $100,450. *Exempt (salaried) positions under FLSA are not eligible for overtime.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor of Science degree with emphasis on mechanical engineering or related
- 3 years of work experience as a design, operations, or construction engineer in higher education or healthcare projects, or as a facilities engineer for a major institution or campus
- Texas Licensed Professional Engineer
- Skills
- Expertise in project management on mechanical and infrastructure projects.
- Expertise in central plant-fed facilities systems, high education or healthcare mechanical design environments
- Knowledge of controls systems and their coordination between mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems
- Effective written, presentation, and verbal communication - especially in communicating technical issues to a wide variety of audiences
- Effectively collaborate across engineering disciplines
- Knowledge in technical discipline/domain needed to deliver projects
- Must exhibit resilience, diplomacy, influence, relationship-building, and problem-solving skills in a variety of situations
- Highly team and quality-oriented
- Knowledgeable with building codes and specifications
- Collaborative and optimistic personality
Preferences
- Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or closely related field
- Experience with energy-efficient or LEED-certified mechanical design.
- Experience with building automation and control systems integration.
- Experience with project management information management systems
- Experience with office and construction productivity software (Microsoft, Adobe, Procure, etc.)
Essential Functions
- Assist with defining design criteria, scope definition and justification, and developing design concepts for all University projects
- Assist with the feasibility review of all new projects
- Assist with engineering evaluation and review of all design documents, specifications, and special requirements for the project from design through construction administration phases
- Assist with providing technical guidance and issue resolution on all projects
- Assist with the selection of engineering design professionals and coordinate with them regarding Rice’s Design Standards through the design process
- Assist with providing consultation on the operation and maintenance of building systems
- Work with estimators to ensure the appropriate mechanical costs are captured and project budgets are met
- Assist with interfacing between the various groups within Facilities
- Have strong knowledge of Rice's Design Standards and assist the effort to improve those standards and drive innovative solutions
- Completes special projects as the primary project manager through management of project initiation, planning, execution, monitoring, and closeout, as required

- Documentation as called upon to summarize Building & Grounds Committee or related Subcommittee meetings
Physical Demands
- Ability to conduct frequent construction site inspections at many locations, both on and off campus.
