Job Responsibilities
Advise students on internship placements: answer student inquiries on internships; approve and maintain records of all internship application approval requests, and consult with MSSP staff and/or ISSS when needed; approve permit requests to register for MSSP internship courses; host weekly internship office hours to advise MSSP/+DA students on internship opportunities, requirements, and goals; plan and coordinate internship fairs and informational workshops in collaboration with other programs and external stakeholders; recommend organizations of interest to students and connect to local alumni and/or internship contacts; provide structured feedback to students on their internship application materials and refer to Career Services when needed; collaborate with Penn ISSS to ensure proper compliance with federal regulations for international students.
Develop strategic partnerships primarily with local and other organizations and establish formal agreements (MOUs, student learning contracts); identify, establish, and maintain strong working relationships with MSSP partner organizations; supervise and work with two graduate student assistants to conduct site visits, oversee student internship work, and liaise between students and internship organizations, when needed; working with graduate student assistants, ensure the quality of student internship placements. Collaborate with SP2 stakeholders (Registrar, Admissions, MSSP academic advisors, NPL and MSW programs, and the SP2 Community-Engagement Professional Education Team) to identify appropriate internship opportunities (HUBS) for all three master’s programs; share and develop best practices for internship management; and ensure the accuracy of student data and effective communications, as it relates to internships.
Coordinate MSSP internship administrative processes: maintain Canvas internship resources module and course pages; update internship MS Forms; update internship information on the program’s website; maintain MSSP student internship records, placements, and grades in MSSP SharePoint; approve weekly timesheets in Workday for Work Study students; prepare reports and collect information on the status of the internship program, including key metrics and information such as project assignments, performance evaluations, intern and supervisor assessments, and overall program effectiveness; work with the SP2 Registrar to track students who have not registered for the internship course; submit grades for internship students to SP2 Registrar. Become proficient on SONIA (student internship database); work with SP2 SONIA Database Administrator to maintain MSSP SONIA database listings; set up and maintain accurate and up-to-date internship data, listings, placements, and partner forms in SONIA database.
Provide academic advising to MSSP and/or MSSP+DA students and oversee the coordination of internship communication among all advisors. Assist with course selection, course substitutions and waivers, career development, and graduation requirements; conduct degree planning, degree audits, and prepare course planning worksheets; approve elective courses and permit requests; and other advising-related activities.

Contribute to MSSP admissions initiatives. Assist with recruitment, outreach, and admissions duties; conduct pre-application appointments with prospective students; attend open houses and informational sessions; represent the program at recruitment fairs and events; conduct MSSP admissions reviews and assess applicants; provide recommendations regarding admission.
Programming: devise and coordinate MSSP internship programming; work with UPenn Career Services to promote student networking and career exploration; provide access to industry events and workshops; facilitate resume-building workshops and internship skills. Participate in and help implement MSSP and other SP2 events-related programming, as directed by the Program Coordinator and other MSSP staffers.

Alumni outreach: work with MSSPPAA and SP2’s Associate Director of Alumni Engagement and Annual Fund to plan, coordinate, and implement MSSP alumni programming events and outreach, including maintenance of up-to-date MSSP alumni information.

Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Public Policy, Politics, Nonprofit Leadership, Public Relations or related discipline, and 2-3 years of experience in fundraising, politics, nonprofits or similar organization is required. Master’s Degree strongly preferred, in Higher Education, Public Policy, Politics, Nonprofit Leadership, or related discipline. Prior experience working in career services is valuable. The position requires someone with excellent public outreach, project management, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills. Attention to detail, the ability to work autonomously and as part of a team, flexibility and creativity, and the ability to work on multiple tasks and projects is required. The ideal candidate will be sensitive to the needs of students from diverse backgrounds. Must be proficient in Microsoft Office, including Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Excel. Prior experience working with faculty, university students and student programming is preferred; experience with Banner/Pennant and database management is preferred. A commitment to diversity, social justice, and student-focused service is a must. Please note that this position requires occasional work in the evenings or weekends to participate in student programming or outreach events.
