ABOUT THE POSITION

Under the direction of the President-Superintendent, the Chief Innovation Officer will strategically develop and achieve equity goals of the college through internal collaboration, external partnership cultivation, and activating data-driven innovations that further campus-wide goals surrounding equity, as set forth in the 5-year strategic plan.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The Chief Innovation Officer will be responsible for setting a future-looking course for the school that supports the equity-driven mission and vision; garner professional growth of internal teams; recruit partners who will help implement work or bring new solutions to the college; build an internal and external understanding of the college’s innovation work; and track and refine the work as it progresses. The ideal candidate is a creative problem solver, researcher, exemplary communicator, deeply knowledgeable about systems and transformational change, believes in the power of public education, and is committed to achieving equity goals as defined in the college’s strategic plan.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Internal Innovation

1. Align LBCC’s strategic plan with opportunities for innovation, and develop a roadmap to achieve defined equity goals.
2. Work closely with The Office of Institutional Effectiveness to understand metrics for success, and activate internal plans surrounding equity data and goals.
3. Develop and maintain strong rapport with intersectional teams within LBCC, including executive team, leadership council, Board of Trustees, program staff, faculty, and students.
4. Serve as executive liaison and trainer for new initiatives across and between internal departments.
5. Maintain current knowledge of new developments and innovations in community colleges and higher education in general; recommend changes to maintain relevance of programs and services to meet student and community needs.
6. Promote campus-wide participation in the creation and development of innovative strategies to support equity. wide participation in the creation and development of innovative strategies to support equity.

External Partnerships

1. Prepare and execute communication about school needs and conduct outreach to potential external partners.
2. Managing external partnerships to solicit resources, funding and external exposure of innovation work at LBCC.
3. Make presentations as necessary to various groups within the district, community and state.
4. Build a name for LBCC within the growing corporate community in Long Beach.
5. Serve as liaison and thought partner with the LBCC Foundation to assist with related fundraising efforts.
6. Acts as a liaison between the Superintendent President and foundations, organizations, committees, councils and other interested parties.
7. Represents the Superintendent-President at events as requested, serves as a contact point for protocol matters affecting the District and the Superintendent-President’s Office.
8. Supports the governmental and community relations activities of the Superintendent-President.

Administrative

1. Composes correspondence independently on a wide variety of matters, including material of a confidential nature.
2. Reviews, researches, and summarizes a variety of administrative information and data, and prepares related reports.
3. Develops, coordinates and conducts in-service workshops for administrative staff.
4. Serves as the Superintendent-President’s liaison with district, community, county, state, local agency, vendor, and media representatives.
5. Responds to requests for information and coordinates such contacts with Communications and College Advancement as needed.

Knowledge of:

1. Government functions with a commitment to participatory governance and ability to build consensus, resolve difficult issues, and foster a team environment.
2. Principles and practices of organization, planning, development and supervision.
3. Effective communication, demonstrating a high comfort level with leaders in the private and public sector as well as educational agencies.
4. Leadership experience in strategic, operational, and long-range instructional planning and related educational and support services.
5. Evidence of a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
6. Demonstrated advocacy for students and students' needs.
7. District policies and procedures.
8. Technology as related to administrative and workplace requirements, including word processing, spreadsheets and databases.
9. Decision-making parameters and recommendation process; operational issues versus policy.
10. Fundamentals of budgetary processes and procedures.
11. Report and business correspondence formats.

Ability to:

1. Work with and support an elected board of trustees.
2. Provide effective community outreach and establishing necessary resources for innovative programs and services that support student learning and success.
3. Manage financial resources with a record of fiscal responsibility and accountability.
4. Plan and prepare presentations and script speeches on behalf of the Superintendent- President.
5. Oversee employee development, measure performance and supervise effectively.
6. Demonstrate the ability to do budget analysis, utilize spreadsheets and provide recommendations.
7. Exercise sound judgment in representing the Superintendent-President in compliance with District standards, guidelines, practices, protocols and policies.
8. Utilize mediation skills, diplomacy and strong interpersonal skills in all contacts on behalf of the Superintendent-President’s Office.
9. Evaluate work methods and efficiency.
10. Represent the Office of the Superintendent-President in both external and internal social settings.
11. Exercise initiative and independent judgment.
12. Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, on all levels of the organization and with all external contacts.
13. Flexibility in responding to the demands of a rapid-paced office environment with frequent changes in priorities.

Education, Training and Experience:

• A Master’s degree, from an accredited college or university, and
• Five (5) years of progressive senior level management experience in an educational setting;

Desirable Qualifications

• Doctorate preferred.
• Additional experience in work with legislative bodies, lobbying and/or elected officials is desirable.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

A valid California driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the District’s vehicle insurance policy.
