Campus Safety Officer Responsibilities: The primary Campus Safety Officer responsibility is providing for the protection of life and property on university property’s. This may be accomplished by patrol vehicle, T3, cart, foot, and/or bicycle patrol of campus roadways, walkways, parking lots, administrative and academic buildings and residential areas located on campus as well as other satellite locations and student housing located near campus.
Duties may include but are not limited to the following:
Interact positively with campus community members on a daily basis and assist members in identifying potential safety and/or criminal problems.
Provide excellent customer related services to students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
Proactively implement the department’s community policing and outreach program.
Conduct initial investigations of reported crimes and incidents occurring on Biola property and submit appropriate reports. Testify in court as necessary.
Consistently and proactively patrol Biola campus properties by varying means; e.g., foot, bike, cart, and/or motor vehicle.
Investigate traffic accidents within the boundaries of campus and prepare accident reports.
Direct traffic as necessary; provide directions and other assistance to students, faculty, staff and visitors.
Respond to and help manage emergency and disaster related incidents that occur on-campus.
Conduct tri-annually, student safety training; including evacuation drills and disaster preparedness exercises.
Respond to requests for emergency medical assistance, rendering first aid and/or CPR/AED when necessary.
Ensure that activity logs are maintained and updated accurately.
Observe safety hazards and promptly report them to appropriate persons, as well as responding to all security and fire alarms.
Unlock/secure appropriate buildings/rooms and facilities as directed.
When necessary, enforce University Policies, California Penal and Vehicle codes on university property.
Work cohesively with external community partners such as county and federal resources as necessary.
Perform other services and duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications/Application Process:
Must have a current and valid California driver license, free of any restrictions and the ability to operate all equipment necessary in the Campus Safety vehicles.
Must be very proactive and self-driven.
Must have excellent customer service and communication skills.
Must have excellent critical thinking and decision-making skills.
Must have strong human relations skills with the ability to interact positively with a diverse university population, and the ability to develop and implement problem solving techniques within the institution.
Must be team oriented.
Must have the physical ability to assist with the rescue of sick and injured persons on-campus.
Must be able to function on foot patrol and make physical arrests when necessary without physical aides.
Hold personal theological beliefs in agreement with the Biola Doctrinal Statement. Must maintain a lifestyle in consonance with sound Christian principles and those that are in agreement with the Biola Doctrinal Statement.
Must be able to work outdoors in inclement weather for extended periods of time.
Must undergo and pass the department administered oral interview.
Must submit to and pass the Human Resources testing and interview process.
Must submit to and pass a thorough personal and criminal background investigation.
Preferred Candidate Qualifications:
Completion of a California P.O.S.T. Basic or Modular III, or II, or I academy within the last five years.
Current/Active Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS) Security Guard license.
Current American Red Cross or American Heart Association certificates in first aid, CPR and AED or equivalent certifications.
Previous work experience in a University public safety department.
Upon Conditional Job Offer, Each Campus Safety Officer Candidate Must:
Be able to complete and pass a psychological examination.
Be at least 20 years of age by the date of hire.
Be willing to work; a rotating schedule (approximately every 6-months), varying shift hours (typical work days, Sunday through Wednesday or Wednesday through Saturday - grave shift; 2200-0800 hrs., day shift; 0700-1700 hrs., swing shift; 1600-0200 hrs.), holidays, special events, special details or assignments or 4. other days/hours as assigned.
Be willing and capable of successfully completing a California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS) Security Guard course (as applicable).
Be willing and capable to successfully complete a P.O.S.T. PC832 (powers of arrest) course, (as applicable).
Be willing and capable of successfully completing the P.O.S.T. Modular Academies III and II within a designated time frame (as applicable).
Be willing and capable to successfully secure the appropriate BSIS certifications for the carry of pepper spray and baton (straight, side-handle and collapsible), as applicable.
Be willing and capable of successfully completing a California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS) Exposed Firearm course and meeting all issuance requirements/prerequisites as outlined by BSIS (as applicable).
Be willing and capable of successfully completing an American Red Cross/American Heart Association first aid/CPR and AED certification course (as applicable).
Be willing and capable to successfully pass and complete a TASER certification course.
Line Supervision: Shift Sergeant.
Supervision of Others: May supervise Cadets during an emergency situation or in the absence of the Cadet supervisor. May supervise university employees during crises.
