The Role
The Safety Manager works with the various departments within the organization in support of AvalonBay’s Corporate Safety and Health program to ensure compliance with municipal, state, and federal safety and health regulations.? This role is responsible for overseeing and ensuring compliance with safety regulations and protocols within the organization. While assigned to a particular community, or business unit, the Safety Manger will provide additional support to additional areas within the organization as needed.?The Safety Manager identifies, manages, and works to create solutions for hazardous conditions that may lead to injury, illnesses, exposure, and/or property damage.?This role also supports all administrative functions that are relevant to Safety and Health. This role is performed by an associate who through experience and credentials, can provide influence and direction to Safety processes and people.
This person:
- Enforces safe work practices and safe working conditions in accordance with all municipal, state, and federal regulations.
- Implements and ensures compliance with AvalonBay safety and health program requirements.
- Ceases work when conditions or circumstances are related to an immediate danger to life and health condition (IDLH).
- Directs associates, vendors/contractors to correct IDLH conditions.
- Conducts visual safety inspections and effectively identifies hazards.
- Documents safety and health inspections.
- Creates reports and documents observations, reports, and follow-up with a high quality of work.
- Ensures corrective action(s) has been completed for non-compliant conditions.
- Issues reports of compliant/non-compliant conditions.
- Tracks corrective action(s) by contractors and vendors to completion.
- Builds positive working relationships through communication with associates, contractors, and/or vendors to improve safety at our communities and offices.
- Investigates safety issues, including incidents, and ensures all needed information is provided to the relevant business units such as Risk Management, Safety, Legal, HR, etc.
- Provides guidance and influence to develop Safety Engineers, AVB associates, and contractors/vendors.
- Reviews contractor and vendor safety and health submittals and provides recommendations to improve written safety and health documents.
- Analyzes safety and incident data and trends. Uses information to make recommendations for improvement and provides safety and health metrics.
- Develops and delivers technical training programs for relevant safety topics, processes, and procedures.
- Serves as a resource for safety training for AvalonBay associates, vendors, and contractors.
- Assists the Safety department in overall program improvement, implementation, and expansion as directed.
- Sets goals, reviews, and prioritizes daily, monthly, and annually to completion.
- Oversees multiple locations in support of safety priorities.
- May have one or more direct reports and effectively participates in their development.
Experience: 5-7 years of relevant experience.
Education: Related four-year degree preferred, or relevant equivalent experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Demonstrates knowledge of safety and health principles including the ability to identify known potential exposures and recommended corrective actions.
- Demonstrates proficiency in Microsoft Office suite programs, internet inquiries, email, and regulatory websites.
- Demonstrates interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate clearly (both verbal and written).
- Possesses working knowledge of OSHA Safety and Health regulations, national consensus standards, and municipal and state regulations governing safety and health.
Physical Demands:
- Performance of the required duties requires physical ability to climb permanent and temporary stairs, ability to climb ladders and negotiate work areas.
- Requires use of hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls.?
- Exhibits the ability to frequently stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and climb (stairs, ladders, etc.).?
- Exhibits the ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.?
- Ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE); including head protection, face protection, safety glasses, gloves, protective footwear, vest, and respiratory protection.
Working Environment:
- Regularly work at a community, new development, or regional office.
- Travel may be required between multiple locations.
Licenses/Certifications:
- OSHA 30
- CPR/First Aid current within 30 days of employment.
- BCSP certification is preferred.
