The Position

HELIX WATER DISTRICT is seeking a FULL-TIME MAINTENANCE RANGER to join our team at LAKE JENNINGS. This is a non-exempt, entry- to journey-level classification.

The Maintenance Ranger performs the lake area and campground facilities maintenance, repair and construction activities and ensures the security of the district’s reservoir and campground; performs other related duties as assigned.

Work Schedule:
Schedule includes weekends and varies slightly, seasonally. The schedule to start is Thursday - Monday as follows:

Thursday, Sundays and Mondays: 1:45 p.m. to 10:15 p.m.
Fridays and Saturdays: 3:45 pm. to 12:15 a.m.

During the off season (starting in mid-October), Friday and Saturday shifts change to 2:45 p.m. to 11:15 p.m. Others stay the same.

Scheduled Pay Increases:

July 1, 2025: 2% - 4% cost-of-living adjustment.
Annual Merit Increases: Full-time employees are eligible for 5% merit increases on an annual basis until they reach the top of their range.

Overview of Responsibilities

Duties include but are not limited to the following:

Communicates to staff and guests as needed to ensure a positive experience for all guests. Enforces lake and campground rules and regulations.

Patrols and maintains the security of the lake and surrounding area to prevent unauthorized persons from entering; investigates unusual situations and occurrences; reports inappropriate behavior or actions to local law enforcement agencies.

Investigates complaints regarding misuse of the lake and facilities; notifies proper authorities of illegal activities on the lake and facilities; answers questions and provides information to lake and campground guests.

Inspects facilities, campsites, boats, trails, docks and security gates for maintenance needs and performs any needed repairs in a timely manner; carries out basic plumbing repair on restrooms and campsites.

Operates a boat to patrol the lake area.

Collects fees and engages in the sale of camping reservations, permits and assorted items.

Removes trash and debris from the lake’s roadways, shoreline and water.

Performs landscape maintenance including planting, fertilizing, trimming, and cutting back trees, brush and ground cover; maintains seasonal firebreaks and access roads around the reservoir; clears vegetation around reservoir as needed.

Safely operates and maintains vehicles, hand and power tools, wood chipper, chainsaws, boat motors, tractor, Rhino and other equipment used to perform security, operations and maintenance activities.

Orders supplies, parts and equipment as needed to perform maintenance and repair; keeps storage areas and shops tidy.

Engages in safe work practices. Attends and provides safety-related training to lake and campground staff and volunteers.

Qualifications

Training and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school or GED equivalent.

Minimum of one year of experience in maintenance, recreation or lake operation.

A valid Class C California driver license and ability to maintain insurability under the district's vehicle insurance policy.

Possession of or ability to obtain valid California Boater Safety card within six months.

Possession of or ability to obtain valid CPR/AED and first aid certification within six months and maintain valid certification thereafter.

Knowledge of:

Public relations and customer service.

Basic math, cash handling techniques and use of computer equipment.

General facilities maintenance, repair, construction, and patrol procedures, methods, and techniques including maintaining a high level of restroom, lake and campground cleanliness.

Basic landscaping maintenance and cultivation methods and materials.

Safety practices and procedures related to the work.

Basic retail operation and inventory management systems and practices.

Ability to:

Present a friendly, positive, and professional image of the district and deal effectively and courteously with the public often in adverse situations.

Work independently and exercise sound judgment and initiative within established policies and guidelines.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, volunteers, law enforcement agencies, the public, and others encountered in the course of the work.

Perform a variety of basic and journey-level ground, landscape and building maintenance work.

Communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.

Handle cash and balance daily receipts.

Learn and interpret district policies and guidelines concerning the use of the lake recreation area and relevant California Department of Fish and Wildlife laws.

Operate power tools and equipment in a safe and efficient manner.

Perform physical work in extreme weather conditions.
