Department Introduction: The Water Resources and Civil Infrastructure group manages and maintains Stanford's civil infrastructure: water, sewer, and storm drainage systems, in conjunction with an extensive water efficiency and stewardship program, which focuses on sustainable water use by managing available resources to meet University needs and preserving ecological systems to maintain these vital resources for future generations.
Job Purpose: This position reports to the Associate Director, Water Systems Operations, who manages the Water Shop in the Water Resources and Civil Infrastructure Group in the Sustainability and Energy Management department. The Water Shop technician under the direction of a lead or supervisor, performs preventive maintenance, overhaul, and repair of a variety of pumps and control devices; isolation of failures and shutdown of system or a portion thereof in emergency and non-emergency situations; water purification and sanitation, in accordance with state laws; operation of water storage facilities and distribution components. The work also involves water quality monitoring and construction, repair and inspection of water systems and general vigilance of everyday operations and potential problems.
Core Duties*:
Operate, maintain, and repair control devices such as pressure regulators, distribution valves, automatic control flume gates, and backflow and check valves to assure proper water distribution and system cross-connections.
Operate, maintain and repair pumps and machinery.
Program, maintain and repair water meters.
Calculate and accomplish proper dosage of chlorine for purposes of water sanitation, purification, and treatment in accordance with state law.
Draw and test water samples for regulatory compliance; take samples to outside laboratory as required.
Locate underground lines using electronic pipe locator prior to excavation; ensure that distribution valves are not covered or buried after paving or excavation.
Flush segments of system to eliminate deposits or sediment.
Isolate and shut down affected portions of system for repairs in such a manner as to minimize inconvenience to users; notify users of such occurrences.
Oversee water system repairs or additions by contractors to assure integrity of the system, measure and map new additions.
Patrol and inspect as necessary wells, reservoirs, lakes, pumping stations, lake spill boards and pipelines.
Receive and investigate complaints from users.
Participate in trainee instruction.
Provide on-site guidance for labor crews and plumbers.
Respond to emergency calls for water systems at night and on weekends and holidays.
Adhere to safety rules.

Education & Experience:
High School diploma or GED equivalent and three years of skilled maintenance work experience, or combination of education and relevant experience some of which included responsibility for water system operations.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Employees in this classification must have a comprehensive working knowledge of the general principles of water storage, production and distribution.
Demonstrated strong communications skills (both verbal and written). Ability to understand and follow job-related instructions given in English, either verbally or in writing.
Proficiency in essential computer skills, including but not limited to email, Excel, Word, and utilization of diverse reporting systems.
Demonstrated comfort and proficiency in working with technology and various work applications.
Must be willing/able to wear a respirator and pass annual pulmonary function medical and auditory testing, fitness testing and training.
Sufficient experience and mechanical and plumbing skills and aptitude to work independently and without assistance.
Ability to operate or learn to operate, maintain, and repair wells, pumps, water valves, pressure regulators, water meters, flumes and flume gates, chlorinators.
Familiarity with state and local regulations governing water disinfection, distribution, and cross connection controls.
Certifications and Licenses:
Valid California noncommercial Class C Driver License.
Have and maintain California DWR (Dept. of Water Resources) certificate G2 Water Distribution Operator Certificate
Ability to obtain and maintain within 24 months the AWWA (American Water Works Association) Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester Certificate
California DWR (Dept. of Water Resources) certificate G2 Water Treatment Plant Operator Certificate preferred.
AWWA Cross Connection Control Inspector certificate preferred.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to maintain a California Noncommercial Class C Driver License.
Must be physically able to move manhole covers, operate valves and access trenches and manholes.
Must be able to wear a respirator and pass annual function medical and auditory testing, fitness testing and training.
Occasionally perform seated work, kneel/crawl/twist/bend/stoop/ squat/reach work above shoulders.
Perform desk-based computer tasks, use a telephone and sort file paperwork or parts.
Rarely climb, lift/carry/pull objects up to 40 pounds.
Working Conditions:
Able to work any day of the week and at all hours to cover emergencies. Able to work overtime, evenings, and weekends, including holidays, sometimes in inclement weather conditions.
Able to receive phone calls and respond when able on rotating basis referred to as beeper duty.
Required to wear appropriate issued uniform.
Required to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
May be exposed to noise greater than 80db TWA, biohazards, asbestos, and heavy metals.
May work in confined spaces or at heights from 4- 10. Feet.

The expected pay range for this position is $50.40 to $61.01 per hour. Placement in the pay range is subject to the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
