Arlington County is an exciting, innovative local government entity located in Northern Virginia. We are seeking highly motivated individuals for an exciting internship with the Department of Environmental Services. This Internship will provide currently enrolled college students with in-depth, hands-on learning opportunities in areas critical to supporting local government initiatives.
Over the course of the summer, interns work under the mentorship and supervision of senior staff members to gain valuable on-the-job training and real-world work experience. They support the County's efforts to be a leader in sustainable waste management.
Department of Environmental Services
The intern will work out of Arlington County’s Environmental Management Office within the Solid Waste Bureau (SWB) and work with the regulated community to collect recycling system data/observations, perform compliance inspections, and assist with compliance with the Arlington County recycling regulations. The intern will also provide oral and written feedback, technical assistance, and education to building owners, managers, and tenants, and are responsible for maintaining accurate and complete records through a cloud-based system.
Under the direct supervision of a mentor, responsibilities include:
Performing Multi-family and Commercial recycling system compliance inspections;
Learning, understanding, and articulating program policies, code requirements, and information about solid waste, recycling, composting, and waste reduction and diversion to effectively educate the public and answer questions;
Providing excellent customer service with an enthusiastic and professional demeanor;
Documenting observations in an online database and issue violation notices as appropriate; and
Assisting with other SWB tasks and functions as needed.

Selection Criteria
Minimum: In order to apply for this position, you must have completed at least two years (60 semester hours) in a Bachelor’s degree program prior to the start date of the internship (June 8, 2024).
Degree Requirements: None, applicant must simply have an interest in discovering/learning about Environmental Management, local government policies and practices, as well as green-compliance in a regulated community.
Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with a G.P.A. of 3.0 or above and applicants may be asked to provide certified official transcripts.
Special Requirements
Driver's License: The applicant must possess, or obtain by time of appointment, a valid driver's license or the ability/willingness to utilize alternative methods of transportation to perform assigned duties and responsibilities at locations other than the primary worksite. If the applicant possesses or acquires a license, then the applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain or provide a copy of their official driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.
Background Check: A pre-employment criminal records check will be conducted. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.

Additional Information
Work Hours: This is a full-time position (40 hrs/week) M-F between 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with some occasional weeknight and weekend work. This is not a fully remote opportunity.
Employees will be expected to be in the office at the discretion of the Supervisor and needs of the agency.
