General Description
Provides comprehensive assessment, evaluation services and utilizes data to drive instruction for students with disabilities. Applicants should understand the strengths, preferences, interests, area(s) of need(s) of students with disabilities including but not limited to: academics, the transition planning process and independent living skills. The Transition and Academic Support Specialist will work collaboratively with the Department of Special Education, special education teachers, building level administrators and other relevant personnel to increase postsecondary outcomes of students with disabilities.

Provides guidance and instruction in the areas of academics, transition planning process, self determination and independent living skills to support postsecondary measurable goals.
Develops a student profile summarizing the review of data and assessment results.
Coaches staff to utilize formal and informal assessments to identify strengths, preferences, interests, needs and prerequisite skills needed for independence.
Provides data drive recommendations and suggestions to the appropriate staff.
Provides in-service and pre-service training to county-wide staff on the importance and use of assessments.
Provides data to special education teachers and other relevant personnel to assist in developing the student’s IEP.
Provides information to assist in identifying appropriate instructional techniques and/or curriculum modifications to promote the acquisition of academic and self determination skills.
Assists in the development of academic and transition planning as an integral component of the student’s IEP.
Facilitates the collection and analysis of PreK-12 compliance indicators and to identify relevant variables to improve transition services and postsecondary outcomes.
Provides professional development to staff including but not limited to: data collection and academic programing.
Conducts regular classroom visits and provides teachers and staff with feedback regarding best practices.
Supports the Academic and Career Planning process.
Collaborates directly with the Results Driving Accountability team as well as the Special Education Specialists in the areas of Reading and Math.
Maintains a daily record of support provided to school based staff and students.

Physical Demands:
Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to use a telephone, to enter data into a computer terminal; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear, understand speech and speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly at normal levels indoors and on the telephone. Frequent walking, standing, light lifting up to 25 pounds. Physical agility to drive if required to go to multiple locations. Bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk and reach overhead. Frequent movement throughout the school facilities is required. Occasional lifting of objects up to 40 pounds.
Work Environment:
The employee regularly works in a school or office environment. The noise level is quiet to moderate.
Qualifications
Working knowledge of the concepts, principles, and methodologies of instruction, transition, learning theory and teaching methodologies.Working knowledge of eligibility criteria and services provided by community-based organizations. Working knowledge of the regulations and policies related to disabilities; of concepts, principles and research-based methodologies designed to improve students’ learning. Working knowledge of work samples, data collection formats and technical report writing. Working skill in operating personal computers, word-processing and database software, or other automated office systems. Demonstrated ability to organize, schedule, and monitor work assignments and to communicate effectively, orally and in writing. Demonstrated skills in decision making, problem analysis, conflict resolution, interpersonal relation and research and planning. Demonstrated ability to collaborate with other instructional personnel and develop instructional goals for students.
Requirements
Must hold a valid Virginia Collegiate Professional License or Post Graduate Professional License with an endorsement in at least one special education area. Master’s Degree in Special Education preferred. A minimum of three years of teaching experience of students with disabilities is required. Valid Virginia driver’s license.
