ABOUT THE POSITION:
The fundamental reason for the existence of this classification is to perform a variety of technical duties involved in the collection and preservation of industrial and commercial wastewater samples and any other sampling required of the pretreatment program, meter reading and perform basic permitting, inspection and enforcement functions related to the commercial portion of the industrial waste pretreatment and storm water programs.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE:
The ideal candidate is motivated, eager to learn, has excellent work ethics and customer service skills. Attention to detail and the ability to intelligently follow instructions are key skills. The ideal candidate will also be familiar with or have the ability to, collect samples in the field; read water meters, use wastewater monitoring equipment; maintain accurate data and keep detailed records; work effectively alone or as part of a group and in a team based organization; follow instructions and procedures including safety compliance; convey technical information to supervisory and environmental compliance personnel; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships and deal tactfully and effectively with those contacted in the course of work; speak and write clearly, concisely and effectively; read and interpret complex technical documents and instructions; and use computerized software programs including word processing, spreadsheet and data base applications.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:
Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience - Sufficient wastewater experience or experience performing field technician and/or laboratory duties which demonstrates possession of the required knowledge and abilities.
Education - Equivalent to a two-year degree in Environmental studies or related field. Sacramento State Pretreatment Facility Inspector course or other course work approved by the Utilities Department, completed within two years.
