Specialist: Junior or Assistant
Job Description:
We are seeking an enthusiastic, hard-working, and passionate person to join the Capra Lab as a Research Specialist. We are an evolutionary and computational biology laboratory (http://www.capralab.org/) that uses the tools of computer science and statistics to address problems in genetics, evolution, and biomedicine. The individual hired for the available position will become a key member in our group, who will participate in ongoing research projects and support lab management. The individual will be supported in developing and driving their own research project. This individual will also have responsibilities in managing lab resources, curating datasets, applying established computational workflows to new datasets, and assisting post-doctoral fellows and graduate students in the lab in their work. The ideal candidate will have completed coursework and/or have hands-on research experience in computational biology, genetics, evolution, machine learning, and/or related fields.

Our department has primary responsibility within UCSF for delivering training in the methods of epidemiology, biostatistics, health data science, public health, and health services research.
Required Qualifications:
- Junior Specialist- Must possess a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in computer science, biostatistics, data science/informatics, biology, or a closely related field or four years of research experience.
- Assistant Specialist- Must possess a master’s degree OR a bachelor’s degree in computer science, biostatistics, data science/informatics, biology, or a closely related field with three or more years of research experience.
- Experience working on computational research projects
- Experience with the UNIX command line
- Experience with the python or R programming
Preferred Qualifications:
- Junior rank: A bachelor's degree
- Experience with machine learning
- Experience analyzing large-scale genomic data

Duties:
- Carrying out research projects in computational biology
- Applying established computational pipelines to new applications
- Writing descriptions of results and methods in manuscripts and grant applications
- Supporting graduate students and postdoctoral scholars in their work
- Managing lab resources, scheduling, and purchasing
The position is hybrid, including in-person work at the UCSF Mission Bay campus.
