THE POSITION

The Multi-Media Communications Specialist will provide a high level of support to the Superintendent by handling information being sent to and received from the public; act as his/her spokesperson and develop working relationships with the South Orange-Maplewood community as a whole; independently manage all facets of strategic communication, media, and government relations programs, using all available mediums, with emphasis on the use of the internet in real time.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

Bachelor’s Degree.
Minimum five years of related professional experience.
Excellent computer and Web 2.0 skills.
Ability to effectively communicate with internal and external constituents.
Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills required.
Required criminal history background check and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident/immigrant status.

Ability to effectively communicate with internal and external constituents. Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills required. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable.

JOB GOAL(S)	Communications: Working directly under the Superintendent of Schools, this individual will serve as the spokesperson for the district and will establish and maintain excellent working relationships with members of the school community and related external agencies and departments. Independently manage all facets of strategic communication, media, and government relations programs, using all available mediums, with emphasis on the use of the internet in real time. Work under deadlines, in crisis situations, and at times, with topics and situations that require extreme sensitivity. Responsible for the seamless and accurate collections, synthesis and reporting of information to all stakeholders. Operate within budget and create salient pieces that are well received and understood by all constituencies. Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively and accurately, both orally and in writing.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

1.	Develop and execute annual, strategic web and social media plans, managing the District’s overall online presence and digital initiatives in support of the District’s mission and marketing objectives.
2.	Prepare school district publications, including newsletters, annual school calendar, BOE student and staff recognitions, and information brochures and annual report. Write, photograph, film and coordinate the reporting of school news to local and outside media using both traditional and multi-media, and maintain file of school news and information. Write, design and prepare district publications, including the district calendar, handbooks, brochures, newsletters, communications, and e-blasts.
3.	Media relations Encourage outside media to cover school events. Field media inquiries. Establish and maintain positive, professional relationships with members of the media. Issue timely news releases on student, staff and district activities. Provide school news to local news media. Work with staff to publicize performances, exhibitions and special programs. Alert Superintendent and Board to notable publicity.
4.	Serve on District website, working with various constituents to promote improvement and guide updates. Train appropriate content managers on software and enforce brand standards and communications policies.
5.	Prepare regular and timely social media communications regarding capital improvements and the school redistricting plans/process.
6.	Maintain the District’s online calendar by coordinating with all School departments and divisions
7.	Coordinate and send all broadcast emails on behalf of the District and Parent Association
8.	Create and post engaging content for school owned social media accounts to support the District’s marketing plan and in coordination with all other digital and print communications
9.	Create and distribute a weekly e-newsletter to parents, faculty, staff and trustees, informing the community of District events and providing reminders to enhance engagement and streamline the dissemination of information. Enforce polices and deadlines to ensure an efficient workflow while maintaining positive working relationships with content providers
10.	Partner with the Technology department to assist in the implementation of major technology initiatives, ensure effective website administration, and provide useful electronic communication tools for the entire community
11.	Create photo and video content of District events and student life for use in District communications and publications. Manage all school photography and videography schedule and relationships with independent contractors. Maintain an organized repository of all photo and video content
12.	Attend key school events as assigned, traveling between all campuses as needed. Create and execute web and social media promotion for these events
13.	Engage in relevant professional growth opportunities
14.	Attend Board meetings and advise regarding presentations and publicity. Prepare Board of Education proclamations and recognitions, publicize agendas and report on actions taken by the Board. Draft articles and speeches for the Superintendent or the Board, as requested. Support special events such as retirement awards and staff recognition and activities.
15.	Provide counsel and assist Superintendent in interpreting public opinion about district. Work with Superintendent to develop programs to promote strong public relations. Communicate proactively the rationale behind decisions. Address issues that impact the district. In a crisis, work with Superintendent to craft response/message.
16.	Serve as liaison to the news media, community organizations, key communicators, realtors and prospective residents and student organizations; prepare district information packets upon request. Maintain open lines of communication with the community and the staff organization, and provide prompt responses to requests for public information about the district, its policies and its programs.
17.	Other duties as assigned
