The Accelerator is seeking a Director of Engineering to collaborate with team members in developing, deploying, and improving data-intensive applications and processes. This individual will work as part of a small cross-functional team to assist in product design, iterative development, and the mission of supporting policy-relevant research by constructing shared infrastructure. The role requires extensive knowledge and experience using advanced techniques.

The primary focus of this role is to lead the engineering team, oversee infrastructure design and management, and ensure robust development practices. The ideal candidate should have experience with cloud platforms, software development, and automation tools, and be capable of driving innovation and efficiency. This involves collaborating with cross-functional teams to modernize platforms, support strategic initiatives, and engage with stakeholders to align engineering efforts with organizational goals.

A remote work arrangement within the United States may be considered for candidates with the appropriate background and experience. University-paid business travel to Princeton, NJ may be required approximately 2-4 times per year.

The term of this appointment is 1 year, with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory performance and funding.

Strategic Planning and Leadership
- Define and Execute Technical Strategy: Develop and align comprehensive engineering goals with the company's long-term vision and business objectives. Strategize and implement advanced technology solutions to drive sustainable business growth and competitive advantage.
- Executive Leadership: Provide strategic direction and leadership to the engineering team, fostering a culture of excellence and innovation. Mentor and guide senior engineers and managers to elevate their skills, performance, and leadership.
- Advanced Platform Development Architect and design sophisticated products and platforms, ensuring optimal scalability, performance, security, and reliability in line with industry best practices.

Project and Resource Management
- Strategic Project Oversight: Lead and oversee complex projects, ensuring timely completion within defined scope and budget. Strategically prioritize projects based on critical business needs and long-term strategic importance.
- Resource Optimization: Strategically allocate resources to maximize productivity and efficiency. Oversee the engineering department's budget, ensuring optimal use of financial resources.

Collaboration and Communication
- Cross-functional leadership: Collaborate closely with executive leadership and other departments (e.g., product, marketing, user acquisition) to ensure engineering efforts are integrated and aligned with overall company goals.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Effectively communicate complex technical concepts and project progress to non-technical stakeholders, including C-suite executives, clients, and investors, ensuring transparency and alignment.

Process Improvement and Innovation
- Continuous Process Enhancement: Implement and refine best practices, tools, and processes to enhance efficiency, quality, and agility in software development, testing, and deployment. Drive continuous improvement initiatives across the engineering team.
- Quality Assurance Leadership: Establish and enforce high software quality and performance standards. Lead the development and oversight of rigorous quality control processes and methodologies.
- Drive Innovation: Foster a culture of creativity, stay updated on industry trends, and develop innovative solutions.

Recruitment, Team Building, and Professional Development
- Talent Acquisition and Retention: Recruit top-tier engineering talent and focus on retention through career development and a positive work environment.
- Professional Development Leadership: Promote continuous learning and development within the team, staying informed about industry advancements.
- Operational Support: Provide technical support during staff shortages to ensure seamless operational continuity.

- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience

- 15+ years' relevant experience

- deep understanding of software architecture, cloud computing, cybersecurity, and data management, along with familiarity with industry regulations and business processes.
