The Raritan Bay Area YMCA is currently accepting applications for a Summer Camp One-to-One Aide/Counselor .
This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic urban, growing organization just 5 miles west of New York City in the water front city of Perth Amboy. The Raritan Bay Area YMCA has served the ever-evolving needs of our community since 1912. We enthusiastically serve over 6,000 members in the Raritan Bay area in our community building initiatives through Healthy Living, Youth Development and Social Responsibility.
Under the guidance of the Director of Mental Health Services; the Summer Camp One-to-One Aide/Counselor provides individualized support to allow campers with specialized needs the opportunity to fully participate in our engage in our Enrichment and/or Day Camp activities.
The ideal candidate will be kind, patient, empathetic and have previous experience working with youth with individualized education plans and/or special needs.
Our Summer Camp One-to-One Aide/Counselor provides direct supervision for one camper in our seasonal summer camp. The Summer Camp One-to-One Aide/Counselor will be responsible for providing a safe and conducive environment for their assigned camper throughout the day as youth to interact and engage in age-appropriate program activities following the guidelines set by the YMCA, DCF Licensing and Contractual, and the American Camp Association.
The Summer Camp One-to-One Aide/Counselor follows all general camp policies and protocols as provided by the Director of Child Care and Summer Camp Site Coordinators. When not directly engaged in assisting a specific camper, the Summer Camp One-to-One Aide/Counselor will oversee a group of ten campers in their daily activities.
This is a seasonal, nonexempt position.
Camp runs from July 29th through August 24th
Some duties include:
- Participate in and assist in planning all camp activities.
- Develop and assist in the development of age, need and developmentally appropriate, inclusive, creative ways for assigned camper to fully and effectively engage in programming.
- Communicate with group counselors, site leaders and Director of Mental Health Services to identify barriers to engagement and strategies to overcome.
- Ensure proper use of all camp equipment, supplies and other YMCA property, including buses.
- Consistently implement camp policies and procedures, including utilization of positive behavioral support.
- Seek guidance of Director of Mental Health Services, Director of Child Care Services/Unit Leader/Site Coordinator as needed.
- Supervise locker rooms and pool area during swim time.
- Participate in swimming activities and follow all guidelines set by the Aquatic Director and Staff.
- Keep Unit Leader/Site Coordinator informed of all first aid, discipline and other significant problems.

Applicant must be 18 years of age or older. Minimum of one-year related experience or proven performances working with youth with special needs preferably in a school, day care or camp setting in one or more of the following areas: academics, mental/behavioral health, creative arts, camping, songs, skits, sports, aquatics, recreational games. Good written and oral communication skills.
Must have a High School Diploma or its equivalency. One year of college or more preferred.
Experience working with children with special needs is required.
