The Opportunity:
The City is currently searching for a highly skilled, experienced and efficient professional to lead the Engineering Private Development Division of the Engineering Services Department. The Associate Engineer is a journey-level position responsible for performing professional civil engineering tasks including project leadership and technical guidance to assistant engineers, consultants, and other City staff. This position assists in the review and conditioning of private development projects in the City.

The most highly qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the examination process. The Qualifications Appraisal Interview is tentatively scheduled for July 18, 2024. Successful candidates will be placed on the appropriate eligible list for employment consideration for at least six months.

Applicable to All Assignments:
Assists in the review of legal descriptions and grant deeds;
Assists in budget preparation;
Provides technical assistance;
Coordinates and confers with other City personnel and departments, representatives of other public and private agencies and the public;
Assists staff members on various engineering assignments;
Supervises and prepares background and staff reports for City Council and Planning Commission;
Conducts and represents the City at public meetings at the discretion of the Director of the Engineering Services Department;
Serves as resident engineer at the discretion of the director on State and Federally funded improvement projects to ensure compliance with all federal, state and local requirements and standards;
Supervises, trains and evaluates subordinate personnel;
Duties may also include assignments normally preformed by other Associate Engineer assignments.
Engineering Private Development Assignment:
Prepares or supervises the preparation of recommended conditions of approval of tentative and final subdivision maps;
Supervises and/or participates in the review of maps for accuracy and completeness;
Reviews specifications and improvement plans;
Assists staff members on various engineering assignments;
Coordinates with private engineers and developers regarding requirements for developments;
Prepares background and reports regarding waiver requests;
Administers outside engineering and consultant contracts for City construction projects and assessment districts;
Provides technical assistance to various other departments and divisions;
Duties may also include assignments normally performed by other Associate Engineer assignments.
Qualification Guidelines
Education: Educational achievement equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree in civil engineering.
Experience: At least three (3) years civil engineering experience involving design, construction, surveying and traffic, including some supervisory experience.
Special Requirements: A valid Class C California driver's license, which must be maintained throughout employment in this class, is required at time of appointment or the ability to arrange necessary and timely transportation for field travel. Possession of California registration as a Professional Civil Engineer or Traffic Engineer is desirable.
