BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF POSITION: Under the direction of the school administrator and/or his designee, as part of a secondary teaching assignment, instruct high school students in American Sign Language (ASL). The course consists of a preparatory phase to attune students to communication in the manual-visual mode, followed by instruction and practice in vocabulary, sentence structure, elementary conversation, grammar, finger spelling, and the cultural aspects of deafness.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
. California Single Subject Credential – Foreign Language: America Sign Language.
. Must meet ESEA Highly Qualified teacher requirements.
. EL Authorization (BCLAD or CLAD)
. Two years of experience teaching ASL preferred
. Spanish Speaking preferred
Education: Degree from an accredited institution of higher education in deaf studies, deaf education, or hearing impaired education, including all courses needed to meet credential requirements.
Qualities: Ability to meet district standards for physical and mental health. Must have proven ability to relate well with students, parents, administrators, and teachers. Must possess good judgment, knowledge of school and district policies, and ability to reinforce appropriate school behavior.
