Job Summary:
- The Environmental Specialist is a non-supervisory, support role reporting to the Health, Safety, Environmental & Security (HSES) Manager. The Environmental Specialist is responsible for providing regulatory and technical expertise in support of environmental compliance, plant sustainability initiatives and overall environmental performance improvement. This includes the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the plant’s environmental management systems to ensure compliance with applicable regulatory requirements and Lubrizol environmental policies and standards and conformance with the American Chemistry Council Responsible Care standards.

- This is a highly visible position requiring significant interaction with all levels of the plant personnel structure and has the potential for development and advancement within the HSE&S function.
Duties / Responsibilities:
- Lead the plant compliance efforts for air permitting, wastewater discharge, storm water discharge and hazardous and non-hazardous waste disposal.
- Develop and maintain management systems to ensure:
- compliance with all permit conditions
- permit renewals are prepared and timely submitted.
- all required environmental reports are prepared and timely submitted such as Tier I Inventory, Biennial Hazardous Waste Report, NPDES, Quarterly Air permit Compliance, and TRI
- all required environmental compliance plans such as SPCC, RCRA Contingency plan and Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan, Integrated Contingency Plan are maintained and up to date.
- all required environmental inspections are completed, documented and documentation maintained.
- Manage corrective and preventive actions arising from environmental audits and inspections.
- Collect, document, and report necessary plant data for company-wide environmental metrics such as air emissions, utility consumption, GHG emissions and waste disposal.
- Lead and document root cause investigations for environmental incidents.
- Work with plant personnel to incorporate new raw materials, products, and processes into the facility, while ensuring effective environmental compliance and performance improvement
- Lead efforts to maintain management systems for ensuring RC14001plant registration; perform and document annual systems audits.
- Identify and develop opportunities for sustainability projects for example waste, water, and energy reductions in support of company goals.
- Develop and implement programs, plans and procedures, as requested, for meeting/exceeding Safety performance goals and implementation of the Company Safety Elements and Responsible Care Metrics.
- Lead the effort to manage the site chemical inventory and SDS management system.
- Participate in H&S activities for example PHA’s, IH monitoring, safety inspections and procedure development and new employee orientation training.
- Communicate manufacturing impact to meet strategic plans for all associated Business Units.
- Participate as a member of the Avon Lake Senior Management Team.
Skills, Experience, and Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering or HSES field.
- 3+ years Environmental or HSES experience with a focus on Environmental Compliance and Environmental Management Systems experience.
- Experience with air permitting compliance.
- Proven ability to effectively lead with minimal supervision in a matrix organization.
- Self-starter with a drive and desire to manage multiple projects from start to completion.
- Capacity to influence people at all levels both inside and outside of the organization.
- Strong PC skills, including MS Office software.
- Ability and willingness to walk and climb stairs and ladders and wear PPE as needed per plant requirements
Considered a Plus:
- Proficiency in leading a chemical manufacturing plant’s environmental management system; ability to provide direction and support for plant manufacturing and process technology teams.
- Working knowledge and understanding of SharePoint and SAP applications
- Leading cross functional teams toward improvement targets.
- Qualified Environmental Professional (QEP) or Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) or in the process to achieve certification.
- Prior successful implementation of safety or environmental management systems RC14001, OSHAS 18000, ISO 14000.
- Proven background in developing and presenting training programs.
- Knowledge of batch and continuous chemical processing.
