This Librarian II position is an alternately staffed position and may be filled at the Librarian I or Librarian II level. Candidates must submit a separate application for each level that they are interested in.
Typical Tasks
Provides patrons library services including evaluating needs, assisting in locating books and materials and responding to inquiries;
Offers reader advisory services;
Informs patrons regarding library facilities, policies and procedures;
Participates in identifying the needs of the community;
Participates in evaluating current collection and selecting and discarding library materials, as well as ordering materials within prescribed budget;
Develops subject expertise;
Learns sources of information and locates specific information;
Answers reference questions;
Develops specialized library programs for specific patron groups;
Speaks at schools and to community groups regarding library programs and resources;
May conduct book talks and story times and perform puppet shows;
Designs displays and exhibits;
Participates in organizing the physical interior of the library;
Compiles bibliographies, book lists and other resource lists;
Communicates effectively in writing in responding to patron inquiries, preparing reports, or creating content for library blogs or website;
Provides outreach services to communities;
Familiarizes and trains library patrons in the use of digital materials; promotes reading and use of digital resources for all ages;
Assists and trains users to operate public equipment, connect to the internet, use library software applications, and access library services from remote locations;
Uses information discovery tools, including the library's catalog, core library databases, and internet search engines;
Performs basic troubleshooting of technical problems and resolves or appropriately refers those problems;
Accesses and uses basic assistive technologies, where appropriate, to ensure that all users have equitable access to technology;
May participate in supervising and training lower level staff and volunteers; may arrange employee work schedules;
Participates in District-wide committees, work teams, and projects;
Keeps abreast of professional trends and developments, including technology;
Participates in professional organizations and attends workshops and meetings;
Compiles selection aid book lists for use in community libraries;
Interprets cataloging and classification rules and practices for other staff;
Conducts original cataloging as needed;
May supervise work flow of the technical services unit;
May assist in providing information to information systems staff and/or vendors to achieve compatibility with Santa Clara County Library computer systems;
Consults with publishers' representatives concerning acquisition problems and programs;
Participates in needs assessment and in establishing or modifying procedures for acquisitions, cataloging and/or processing;
May have in-charge responsibility for the library and for resolving routine operating problems, in the absence of a Supervising Librarian or Community Librarian;
May be assigned as a Disaster Service Worker, as required;
Performs other related duties as required.
Employment Standards
Possession of a Master's Degree in Library and Information Science or its recognized equivalent from a library school accredited by the American Library Association
AND
Nine (9) months of professional full-time library experience at a level comparable to Librarian I with Santa Clara County Library.
Possession of a valid California Drivers License prior to appointment and the ability to qualify for and maintain a County Drivers Permit.
Knowledge of:
Library tools, methods and procedures;
A wide variety of reading material;
Library reference materials;
Principles and procedures of reference used to locate specific topics;
Classification and cataloging systems and principles;
Planning, organizing and implementing children's, adult and young adult programs to meet patron needs;
Basic computer operations needed to access library networks, applications, software, and productivity tools;
Digital devices such as personal computers, laptops, tablets, smartphones and eBook readers used by patrons to access library services;
Common office software applications such as email, word processing and internet browser;
Principles and techniques of book selection and evaluation to establish balanced library collections;
Library services, programs and policies which serve the community;
Principles of supervision;
Monitoring budgets;
Effective training techniques.
Ability to:
Serve a wide variety of individuals to promote library programs and meet the needs of library patrons;

Advise and instruct patrons in the use of library facilities and reference tools;
